RV-12 Fuel Cap wouldn’t close

Two days ago I went to Pottstown Pennsylvania to pick up my new two me RV – 12. It’s now happily sitting in my hanger in Central Maine at the Central Maine airport. It was a great flight for a first flight in the RV. I flew for one hour and stopped in Danbury Connecticut for fuel. Then I flew for two hours and landed at my home airport in central Maine. It was a CAVU day and I had approximately 30 knots on the tail for the entire trip. At one point I could look to the east and see the Atlantic Ocean about 60 miles out and also look to the west and see Mount Washington, also about 60 miles out. I will have a few questions I’m sure moving forward but my first one is about the gas cap. i’ve adjusted the nut on the back of the gas cap but no matter how I adjust it, I can’t get the handle to lay flat. I do believe the gas cap is nice and tight and won’t fall out, but I would like to get the handle to lay flat. Any suggestions?

That's a nice looking 12. And I also have to say that I'm quite jealous of your hangar!!!

Unfortunately, I can't provide any advice on the gas cap. My 12iS uses a slightly different style (pic below for reference). But, hopefully someone will be along soon who can help you out.

Here's gas cap thread for you that interestingly enough starts with There are 10^6 threads here about fuel caps, but any suggestions about tightness is buried deep in the text or absent entirely.

Search is probably your friend.

The info Tony T provided should do the trick for you. Also take a look at Part #40-ss "Washer Stainless" -- that washer can sometimes get out of place or worn. It is also good for you to know if you have a "vented cap" or a "sealed cap". If it is "vented cap" also check to make sure that the two vent holes in the cap are free and clear of debris.

Just to clarify the directions that Tony T posted, that jam nut does not provide any adjustment whatsoever.
The adjustment is made by rotating part 83A. All the jam nut does is to prevent part 83A from rotating after it is adjusted.
