Found in oil sump screen

Nukum1

I'm New Here
Any idea where these parts might come from? Found in oil sum screen, IO540, slick and Surefly mags, 230T time on BPE motor. RV-10

Update - pulled my left mag (slick impulse) and the bearing’s cage was missing. Found all the parts in the sump.

Nightmare fuel. 230 hours - that's really disappointing. Time to call Rhonda.

I am a betting man. Also prone to jump to conclusions. Pausing and Gathering data has proven helpful many times. I bet a trustworthy source on this forum knows what it is with high confidence. That info will help the decision making process.

Your engine ate the cotter pin on a mag gear and also ate the mag drive bearing in the engine. Pull both mags. One of 'em will be the source. The damage will be easy to see. Your risk is <mostly> damaging the crankcase where the drive bearing rests and/or damaging gears in the accessory case. The gears need to come off to test them - you aren't going to find any cracks with a visual inspection. The crankcase will need to be split if there is damage in the area where the cage bearing sits. Also to verify that none of the loose metal worked its way past the filter and screen (unlikely) and damaged any engine bearings.

I dunno man. if you try to picture what that might have looked like as one piece, it looks like some kind of circular band clamp with ears on each end of the halves with a rivet through them. But based on the picture with your fingernail, it's tiny. Is it possible that it's FOD that got left in the case during assembly or dropped down the dipstick hole at some point?

I'm not an expert on what every widget inside a Lycoming looks like, but I sent your pictures to somebody I know who is an expert.

Edit- Now that I see the picture that Matt posted below, well yeah, duh. thats obviously what it is :(

Looks to be the "spider" that holds the balls in a bearing in place.

I think so too Mike... photo below is not the same exact part, but shows the riveted "spacer/keeper" component used in this type of bearing:

Well, RATS! :(This is why we pull the oil sump screen.

It would be interesting to know how many engines have run thousands of hours without that screen being pulled.

I'll bet a lot. Pulling the sump screen seems like a waste of time until it isn't. I also poke a borescope in the oil drain hole once I've drained the oil to have a peek around the sump. You never know!

Well if it does wind up being in the accessory case, that seems like a 'good' outcome due to accessibility.

I would suggest you remove the accessory case, disassemble everything, remove oil sump and inspect everything. Talk to a good engine shop with your findings and they will tell you if you got lucky or not.
