Time to ground the plane and do an engine tear down. Sad.Any idea where these parts might come from? Found in oil sum screen, IO540, slick and Surefly mags, 230T time on BPE motor. RV-10View attachment 116881

Your engine ate the cotter pin on a mag gear and also ate the mag drive bearing in the engine. Pull both mags. One of 'em will be the source. The damage will be easy to see. Your risk is <mostly> damaging the crankcase where the drive bearing rests and/or damaging gears in the accessory case. The gears need to come off to test them - you aren't going to find any cracks with a visual inspection. The crankcase will need to be split if there is damage in the area where the cage bearing sits. Also to verify that none of the loose metal worked its way past the filter and screen (unlikely) and damaged any engine bearings.Any idea where these parts might come from? Looks to be the "spider" that holds the balls in a bearing in place.
I'll bet a lot. Pulling the sump screen seems like a waste of time until it isn't. I also poke a borescope in the oil drain hole once I've drained the oil to have a peek around the sump. You never know!Well, RATS!This is why we pull the oil sump screen.
It would be interesting to know how many engines have run thousands of hours without that screen being pulled.![]()
I would suggest you remove the accessory case, disassemble everything, remove oil sump and inspect everything. Talk to a good engine shop with your findings and they will tell you if you got lucky or not.Any idea where these parts might come from? Update - pulled my left mag (slick impulse) and the bearing’s cage was missing. Found all the parts in the sump.
