What's going on at The Aero Garage (Vendor Introduction and Updates)

I visited the Aero Garage site and looked at the choices. Which only left me with more questions.

I am an A&P mechanic, not a builder. I am in process of upgrading my RV7 and it just got paint. The tailwheel and assembly was bagged as part of the paint prep but does have some overspray.

When I look at the various options, there is some very beautiful pieces, but the choices are as clear as mud. Where there are options there are no dimensions. Looking at all of the options. You would think there would be a complete package with everything.

Sorry for any confusion!
If you have a standard RV-7 tailwheel, the "Standard RV FSTW" Lite Links will be a drop in replacement, and include about an inch of adjustability for your installation.

The custom length, is for the folks that have an installation such as (but not limited to), An RV-3/4/6 with the original bent rod gear, and may (or may not) have cut their stinger to retrofit a full swivel yoke. Or folks who have put a Scott Tailwheel on their RV, or are building a Kitfox, etc.

As for the Lite Fork, Standard OEM/FSTW is a drop in replacement for any of the tailwheel forks which have a 7/8" diameter spindle. This includes the original Van's Full Swivel fork, and most replacement forks available today.

The Legacy AP size is a replacement for the Aviation Products fork, which uses a 3/4" spindle.

You're welcome to post, message me, or email me with any photos of your current setup if you'd like help clarifying what you've got installed now! Taylor(at)Aero-Garage.com

Thanks!

Taylor, your products look great and I placed an order a week ago for your lite links. Reached out via DM and email for order status and I've got some questions about your tailwheel assy. Looking forward to your response. Cheers.

Hi Taylor,
Congratulations on these products, each one more appealing than the last. Your Lite Fork is a true work of art, it would make a perfect combo with the Golden Standard Wheel from Fairings Etc.
Unfortunately, this fork is a little too narrow and is the only one that cannot be paired without modification (like sanding the tire shoulder…).
Could we imagine that one day you will work on this together ? Dan at Fairings is waiting for a reply if I am correctly informed. 😉

That fork looks awesome Taylor!! I’m wondering how the CG is going to work out on the Rocket…..built then again, it might work really well on any of our three RV’s….Hmmmm…….

Welcome to the business!

Paul I can verify a Rocket with the MK3 tail and a composite prop it works. My battery is a EarthX moved from the traditional Rocket location to the forward RV4 location. Also have the 1" longerons and the .062 extended deck plate. Still can't exceed Forward CG limits. 62lbs on the tail. Also have the Langair titanium tail wheel spring and the steering arm is built out of titanium as well.

Hi, Taylor,

I've installed a new tail spring with the Lite Links, but in order to install the Lite Fork, I'm waiting for a red anodized DJM tail wheel. When can you expect to have them re-stocked? Thanks!

I am very much looking forward to pre-ordering a matching gold DJM tailwheel!

I have wheels in hand!
I've marked them in-stock on the site so they can be ordered, and I know what colors to have them anodized.

Wheels are heading to Ano Monday, and will be shipping right around new years.

Thanks everyone, and I hope you guys are enjoying some time with your families, friends, and airplanes this holiday season.

Is the DJM (or equivalent) tailwheel physically required to make this tailwheel assembly work, or will the stock wheel work too?
Hey Kyle,
The fork really is designed around the DJM tailwheel. I designed it to be as low-profile as possible, which meant hugging the lines of the tire and spacing the fork halves perfectly for the hub.

As others have mentioned, tire modifications are possible to make alternates fit, however the stock van’s hub is about 1/8” too wide to fit.

Hey Taylor - Any thoughts on supplying a titanium steering arm?

Cheers, Sean
Sean,
I have produced a few prototypes!
A few of which are flying, and I put 30k problem-free cycles on the test rig with another  (I really expected to see some galling or fretting from the ti arm on the ti fork spindle but there but was pleasantly surprised!)

The problem I encountered before trying to scale production was actually finding the titanium plate in a consistent thickness. This is on my short list of things to resolve though!

Thanks

It is extremely frustrating to not be able to back order. You never have the fork, axle and chains at the same time. There should be an option to back order and ship when all are in stock.

The fork is available, comes with the the TI axle. The chains are available as I'm typing this. Order now.

-Included titanium axle is thru-drilled for weight savings and drag reduction. It will accept a pin style tow bar rather than necessitating pegs hanging out in the wind.

I have the same issue. I have been watching the website for months hoping to find tie-downs, axles, and tow bar pin adapters all available at the same time.

I’ve just been ordering as it’s become available, had the links sitting in my toolbox for a few months waiting for the fork. It’s something I’ve come to accept when doing business with people who do this on the side (as is common in this space). It’s not Amazon, it’s (I assume) one guy.

Actually, they are not currently available. It looks like the forks are available until you select the color and size. Once you select red or black, you’ll discover that they are all out of stock when you go to the size drop-down.

I was happy that the wheel, fork, and links were available at the same time. I've been watching this thread and waiting to jump on them when there was a batch produced. Seems to me that allowing backorders would help judge how many to make in a batch. I would've happily put my name on a waiting list. Then they could be produced to order rather than making a bunch and hoping they all sell. I'm sure the inventory isn't cheap. I would've ordered (or backordered) a set of tiedowns if I could've.

Check again! I cranked out another dozen and they're chasing the wheels to anodizing, they'll be ready to ship around New Years as well, along with the wheels. They're now available to order on the site.

I understand the frustration with not being able to place backorders, but it requires a new bracket of logistics which I'm not currently setup to accommodate.

Thanks all! Merry Christmas, and don't forget to set some carrots out for the reindeer!

Hello VAF,
My name is Taylor, and I'm the owner/operator of the Aero Garage; a small company devoted to designing and manufacturing aftermarket components for experimental aircraft. I spent 7 years on the engineering team at Van's Aircraft during which time I designed, manufactured, and tested hundreds of components and tools for everything from the RV-3 to the RV-15. Nearly every machined part on the RV-15 came out of the Haas mill in my garage, and the ones too big to run at home I went in and machined on the larger factory machines. In August, when new-management decided to eliminate all remote work, I opted to dive into my "side hustle" full time.
I currently fly/own an RV-4 that I co-built with the help of some amazing colleagues. Having used a composite MT prop, I have since developed an obsession with weight reduction; particularly at the tail of the aircraft.

One of the first products I developed and just recently launched, Lite Links (below), are inspired by the previous Tail Lynx. However, I redesigned them to utilize a titanium body, titanium tongue and tang. I also reconfigured the spring to use a considerably lighter weight spring, while still delivering an appropriate spring rate. Furthermore, each end gets a bronze clamp-up bushing and brass capture washers which the eye and tongue pivot on, for smooth motion with tight fasteners at each end. The total installed weight, is just 120 grams (4.2 oz) per pair, less than half the weight of anything else I've found available. (Factory chains and springs are 260 grams).

With over 100 hours of flight test, and 250 takeoffs/landings, Lite Links are available now and will start shipping next week. I'm running an introductory/holiday sale through the weekend on https://www.aero-garage.com/store

To all the early-adopters who've already ordered after seeing them in the "Tail Lynx" thread, I thank you sincerely, and am excited to get these into your hands.

Now that you've seen what's out, I'd like to share a product that's currently in testing... The Lite Fork.

The fork is machined from a single piece of billet aluminum on the 5 axis CNC mill. In the next machine over, the steerer spindle is turned and milled from titanium bar. And of course, a custom hollow titanium axle has been designed to perfectly fit the assembly, offering easy grabbing for a pin-style tow bar.
There's already half a dozen tailwheel forks out there, so what sets the Lite Fork apart?

Lightweight: 6.7 oz with axle (10 oz lighter than a standard Van's TW Fork assembly)

Lower profile: Designed to perfectly fit a lightweight DJM tailwheel, there is no extra width that needs to be shimmed with washers or spacers. In fact, the inside of the fork has a machined boss on each side for clean bearing contact, eliminating the need to try and slide washers into the cracks.

Better rudder clearance: The typical top stud, jam nut, and washer were omitted in favor of a low profile titanium top cap, saving 1/2" of vertical room. For airplanes equipped with titanium tails prings, this significantly reduces the chance of damaging your rudder fairing.

Static and dynamic testing are under way, as well as wear-surface material/treatment comparison. Production forks will be anodized in a variety of colors, and shared in this forum post when ready.

I look forward to meeting more of you, and revealing the next several components under development at The Aero Garage. Most updates/new products/sales will be announced in this thread, so subscribe to stay in the loop. You can also sign up for updates on the site, at:

Hey guys! I’m interested in buying a complete package, not interested in buying one bit and hoping that the rest come available some time in the future.

I had asked about a complete kit. When I looked on your website I see a stack of stuff that may or may not be compatible.

I subsequently received an email saying that I would need XY&Z, most of which was unavailable.

Sorry, I ain’t ordering half a bag.

Then purchasing from a small vendor that operates part time may not be for you.

Maybe try Amazon.com

I am thoroughly pleased with the Lite Fork, Lite Links, and towbar pins for the hollow axle. Any tiny amount of patience required from this small part-time shop is well worth the quality and benefit of these specialized products in my opinion. Honestly not much worse than the big stores occasionally do either, despite the implied stability of their ordering systems.

I guess my crystal ball ain’t workin’ right. I see they offer all this stuff and I guess it’s not really crystal clear to me that that all of what is offered is applicable to what I’d like to do.

I’m looking for a click once, buy once, get enough stuff to do get it one and done.

I bought replacement gear leg fairings for my -7 from another vendor here. They sent upper fuselage to gear leg fairings for a -6, (no they don’t fit my -7) and unneeded gear leg to wheel pant fairings.

Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted. Aircraft parts generally ain’t cheap and buying the wrong cr@p ain’t fun.

I’ve learned the hard way that you have to ask questions and verify or it can be an expensive mistake.

Sounds like you asked your question, got your answer, then decided to moan about it anyway?
Caveat emptor! I gave them my information and asked them to give me a total price and notify me when they have everything in stock.

If it doesn’t specifically say that it works with X, then it probably WON’T!

It is not moaning to point out this website fails to make clear which bits are and are not compatible with what and the fact is they need to update their webpage.

Meanwhile I have a perfectly good tailwheel on my aircraft right now

Received my titanium stinger today from Richard at Langair. Wow! It is a work of art. I weighed it for you guys that might be interested.
It weighs 25.43 oz minus the block of wood and the original one weighs 42.43 minus the block of wood. 17 oz difference.
Give Richard a call if you need/want one. Have a little patience but it’s worth the weight (pun). 😉

Has anyone received a new tailwheel from Taylor? I know a few of us were waiting for anodizing and rubber and they were supposed to be shipped around the first of the year.

Hey Arnie, wheels and more forks are on their way back from Ano. Nice looking stinger, that'll be a perfect compliment to the rest of your tail group.

I expect to be caught up on all outstanding orders next week!

Thanks guys

Hi, Taylor,

Just checking on the status of my tailwheel. Thanks!

Hey Guys,
After more than two weeks in transit, I finally received parts back from anodizing including wheels and forks. I'm packing orders this weekend, and those of you who have been patiently waiting should see tracking information first thing this coming week.

Thanks to all of you for waiting this out!

What is the outlook for Ti Hollow Axles? The website has said "Available Soon!" for almost a year now.
I just recently ran a few while producing axles for the Lite Fork. I'll put them in stock next week once I've got current orders out the door.

Just to clarify, this is not the axle for the Lite Fork. This is a replacement for OEM and JD tailwheel forks. (It may fit others, but these are the two I have on hand to verify). Due to the minimum stickout, I strongly recommend using the tow bar pin adapters.

Thanks for the update. I have a JD fork on my -4 so it should fit nicely. I have been waiting on both the bolt and the tow bar pin adapters so hopefully will be able to order everything next week.

Any idea on when tie down rings will be in stock?

Just received tracking for my DJM Black ano wheel..... Thanks Taylor!
Excited to have the wheel, fork, lite links and titanium stinger installed. Ill weigh all the "old" parts for you guys. Original chains, sealed light weight wheel from Flyboys and bell fork.

Been trying to get ahold of you for a couple weeks to just check on an order. Order number 208 and 209.
Hey Tom,
Your order (and all outstanding orders) will be in the mail tomorrow! Forks are finally through assembly, and being boxed as I type this.

Is there an update for this? The website still says "Sold Out"...

Dean, check now. Thanks for the reminder.

Hello, Taylor,

I received your beautiful tailwheel fork last Friday on Order #220.. Unfortunately, no steering arm was included in the package. I sent an email through the website, but no response. Can't find your phone number. Could you please let me know if you received the email and when the steering arm will be sent? PM will be fine, or a phone call at nine-seven-two-seven-four-zero-one-one-six-two
Thank you.

Parts look great. I installed the Titanium bolt and modified my tow bar to accept the pin adapters. Everything fit great. The spacers are a nice improvement over stacked washers. The old hardware weighed in at 61.5 grams. A savings of about 40 grams. All I have left to do it put a bit of torque seal on the nut. I'm looking forward to a "test flight" later this week. Here are a few photos of the install.

Nice machining. We will keep the new fork in mind as we expand the coverage of our new tailwheel fairing, currently versions for the original Van's right-angle fork and the Sky Boys Condor II are nearing flight testing.

Just to follow up - I received the package today. I have not installed it yet, but the workmanship is exquisite. This stuff is artwork.

Taylor - if you are monitoring this, you should look into developing a titanium steering arm. My steering arm is now the heaviest component in the tailwheel assembly. It weighs as much as the entire fork.
