RV6 Busted RNC TFR

Not much excuse for blowing through TFR these days given the resources we have, but kind of feel bad this is going to ruin his week at OSH

In John’s defense, he’s an Oshkosh volunteer. He’s no dummy and admitted he made a mistake. He came in two or three days before the Oshkosh notice went into effect but was still following the arrival route (see the green dashed line). This sent him 5 miles into the 30 mile TFR (see red circle which is not marked on the Oshkosk notice).
What was marked on the notice was the class D airspace rings (marked in blue) which could easily be mistaken for the TFR rings.
He also said the default on his iPad app was to not show the TFRs, and it had to be manually turned on, which he did not do, but obviously should have.
I’m sure many people under the same circumstances could have done the same.

Looking at the drawing it seems inevitable that someone would have made this error. I’m surprised the Feds didn’t see this coming and publish a modified Fisk or create a carve-out for the conga line.
Opportunities for learning all around.
Hope John is Ok and will be back in the air soon.

BTW when will we be free of the TFR nonsense? TFRs and the TSA need to done away with permanently.
Don’t hold your breath……..

As Sam said, dream on! The risk today is very different from when TFRs were first implemented, due to the rise of the drones, but we have a long history of preparing to fight the last war. While I agree that TFRs are mostly security theater, we need to accept their reality and avoid busting them, or they will get bigger and bigger and the penalties will get more and more severe.

Check the NOTAMS

For the hundreds I spoke with at Oshkosh I am now cleared by the secret Service with a much larger file, I am also cleared by the Milwaukee FSDO who was so intrigued with my story that I will be doing some safety speaking enga.gements titled TFRs for dummies. It probably will get recorded and placed as a UTUBE video. For the thousands I did not speak with I hope that you watch the video.

John, very glad to see there aren't more serious consequences that would haunt you for awhile! I'm sure your recounting of the experience will be invaluable for more pilots than you can imagine. Thanks in advance for sharing.

Good on you for stepping up and helping others learn from your experience. It could have happened to almost any of us!

Dave

ps - I'm pretty sure you could have out-turned the F-35, no problem 😀

Before the Wednesday airshow at Oshkosh this year, they did a demo of how a fighter intercept works with a F-16 and (I think) a Baron. Has that be done before or was it added to this year’s airshow due to this recent occurrence? I have not seen that before but maybe I just miss it as I usually not watching the beginning of an airshow.

They have previously had the intercept demo. The times I have watched it was always with the Baron.

Was the Baron in a red Fokker triplane? If so, good intercept.

I wish TFR's and SFRA's would fade away as well, but in my lifetime I've only seen freedoms shrink, never grow. Won't be surprised when TFR's become PFR's.

That was the notable takeaway from my conversation with John.

We tend to depend on cockpit displays. Yeah, I know, real pilots search out all NOTAMS prior to flight and remain in contact with ATC...but for the rest of us, why does a manufacturer elect to program an ADSB display with an OFF function for TFRs? Can anyone think of a reason to NOT display the warning ring?

Spring of 2023 I swapped my trusty 696 for a new 760 Aera. The 696 always displayed TFRs, using a Sirius input. I assumed the 760 did the same, although now with an ADSB input. A few weeks later, if I had not been gaggled with friends in other aircraft, I would have flown into a TFR over Detroit.

It later took a lot of searching among the button options to get TFRs displayed (it's in Weather Products). Worse, now I don't trust the 760.

I was monitoring the MKE airspace every day waiting for the TFR. The original TFR for Mon was the only day the TEXT showed the 30 mile ring. On Sun the text changed, showing the 30 mile ring thru Thursday. I expect to see fire TFR's change but not VIP.

CDG and ORY flights were prohibited just for the opening ceremony. Other than that commercial flights operated normally.

Never, ever, ever trust any of the private online flight planning services to be accurate and up to date in regards to airspace classifications and TFR's. A few years ago, my old Cozy MKIV building buddy called and asked if I could fly down to his airport to help him with some maintenance on the plane. I had come pretty dependent on a particular flight planning service and of course used it to plan the 100 mile flight. Wouldn't you know it, about 2 weeks prior to my flight, the FAA extended the KDTW class B airspace which now covered the airport I was flying into, and I had a brief incursion in the overlaying airspace. Nothing worse than having ATC telling you to "Call the Tower at number TX ------------- immediately upon landing". Dealing with the FAA was pretty straight forward and not overly unpleasant. I think that showing the investigator the flight planning service had STILL not updated the changed airspace nor the NOTAM on the airspace change over a month after the incident gained me a little sympathy. I checked that flight planner on a regular basis afterwards and it was at least 6 months before it caught up to new airspace. Lesson learned the hard way.

I have this website bookmarked for my local use, and hit it before every flight just so there’s a record. It’s an icon on the homepage of my phone (choose ‘add to Home Screen’ when bookmarking).
