(what did you do with your RV this weekend?). Getting this weekend's thread started…
v/r,dr

(6) weeks,
(6,100) NM
(50) hrs tach time
NA romp flight
Taos mountain bike, Synergy Fundamentals, First Flight aerobatics, Hudson (NYC) no-one free-for-all, Canadian relatives, lotsa cool grass strips, friend’s lake visit, plus bi-annual.
Would’ve ventured longer, but wifey said, “It would be really nice if you’re back by July 4.” And, she’s Canadian….

Took my favorite copilot (and Snoopy) up for a lunch flight. Always the highlight of the week for me!

He did most of the flying. The flight planning in ForeFlight as well, come to think of it. And over lunch he explained a new idea for an improved engine. We watched planes come and go, including a pair of impressive looking PC-7s.

The only negative was the heat. It wasn’t bad on the ground, but SoCal has a strong inversion layer and while it was 79 on the ground, it was 98 degrees at 4500’. We flew back at 7500 and it was much better.

HS#2 rivets on front spar and skins going in! Always fun to get to this point, things look like real plane parts.

Return trip from Allentown PA to Richmond VA. I was not instrument current, lots of clouds at about 3500 feet, and there was a presidential TFR over Wilmington that (in combination with restricted areas) basically blocked the direct route — so I flew a hot, bumpy, low altitude VFR tour of west Philly and NJ:

You are an inspiration!!

Didn’t fly an RV this weekend but I did get my tail wheel endorsement in an awesome Super Cub while visiting my family in Bentonville, AR. It was a whole lot of fun. I can’t wait to find out how my RV-8 will compare on landings to the Super Cub.

Hopefully this is acceptable. It's from July 4th, technically not the weekend. Columbia River Gorge/Hood River, looking west. It was a really nice flight. Lots of scenery like this around here. I love having this plane. Thanks, Van, for an awesome kit.Columbia River Gorge - looking west.jpg

We've had some exceptionally hot weather in WA State so I went to town on the canopy. Used the Vans cutting disk with drill motor. Initially trimmed all the fat to practice. Cut in half with 5/8" extra in rear because as it sits down onto the canopy the sides move forward.

I am going to Sika the canopy this week so I spaced it 1/8" above roll bar and layed out the final resting place and cut that yesterday and will sand and finish to the line. The final picture just requires some final final trimming and I'll be good to glue.

Did PHX to MHV yesterday morning at 10.5k and the lowest OAT I saw was 67 degrees. Brutal!
Brutal? My boys and I were at scout camp north of ATL by 120 SM last week where the low was 65 - overnight (only once). Let's not even discuss humidity....

Perspective is everything. Thanks for the chuckle!

I think you missed the point that the 67 degrees was AT OVER TEN THOUSAND FEET cruise altitude! I landed in MHV and it was 105, headed for 112.

At 7k during climb, oil temp went to 185F. Had to reduce power to 65% to keep it from going higher. Chts were all ok thou
At 15k + above inversion layer outside air temps were more reasonable at 45F

You're not gonna believe me, but depending on what day you were flying, I was also visiting family in Bentonville, whose house is in the approach path for KVBT, and I'd pull up flightradar24 every time a plane was overhead, and I definitely saw that yellow super cub. Small world.

Oh wow, small world. I flew every day 7/3 through 7/7, mostly in the pattern at KVBT.

Yeah, must have been you or someone else in that super cub. Well cool. Did you do any flying around the fireworks on the 5th at all? I think someone was up there in a cub, I know there was a Bonanza and I think a 172 that were all circling.

I took my middle son out to West Yellowstone for the 4th. They have a very nice campground right on the field. Had beautiful weather and had a great time, he's already talking about "next time" and his brothers want to go too... Maybe I should have built a -10

Not sure what your oil temp limits are but Lycoming recommends at least 180F. I’m happy to keep them between 180F and 200F. The limit if I recall correctly is 245F

I was running at 130F for the longest time, but then added a 1” block off plate to cooler. This lowered my CHTs and raised the oil temp to 160ish. But my yellow starts at 186F and goes to red line. My manual says to keep oil above 140F. JMHO

Sounds like your boys were were my boy was a week or so ago...

No pic, but got my condition inspection done at Kaolin Aviation at KOKZ. Thanks, Ray! No issues and good for another year.

if you check Lycoming recommendations on oil temp they recommend 165F-220F max 245F.
I’d suggest reading the Lycoming

I think 185f is far too conservative. You need to get the oil temp up to remove any moisture in it.

IMG_5532.jpegIMG_8135.jpegIMG_8136.jpegIMG_8138.jpegSaturday 6 July 2024 Flew from Mossel Bay to Springbok to inspect and sign out an annual inspection on an RV8. Light snow on some of the mountains. Landed in a howling crosswind. Then onwards to a friend’s farm gravel strip for coffee and then home. Flew over the SKA 2km telescope array on the second leg. A nice 770 nm hop. Last leg with a healthy 30 kt tailwind which meant a strong mountain wave over the Swartberg. RV Uber alles.
