Vernier control cable issue

The vernier mixture control on my -7 is acting funny. Have it disconnected and noticed the steel tube below the angle joint is out of its socket. (Rubber boot is being replaced) I thick the tube in, and nothing holding it in. Is there a clip missing? How is that that held in place?
Thanks.

It just lightly snaps in and held together buy the rubber piece that is missing . This doesn’t support any real axial load. It’s job is to keep the internal cable from bowing, as well as some angular flex.

I can’t imagine any legitimate reason that shouldn’t be replaced before further flight. How are you going to get full forward movement when (not if) that pops out again. I’d ground immediately if that was on my plane.

Cables don’t support much load pushing unless in a sheath. The metal housing is there for a purpose.

Upon further review, looks like the tube is simply crimped into the collar. A ring on the collar is location of the crimp. Is there any way to re-crimp the collar?

It is crimped. I’ve had the rubber pieces off of several different cables, and installed and removed several. Never had one come apart. Took one apart once to see how it goes together. (Ended up in trash)

As for crimping, if you had the proper die to crimp the thin tubing without damaging it, maybe. Personally I stand behind changing it before further flight. Control cables and fuel systems are not a place to take chances.

Call ACS or McFarlane. They will give you a professional opinion. Guarantee they will tell you the same thing.

Less than an hour job, and $100 for off the shelf cables if thats what you have. Not a big deal to change.
