Not familiar with what Vans supplies. I built my first extension and it sat flush with the face of the panel, just like the one shown here and the one on my new Advance panel.FYI- if you're trying to mimic the original design you've got the labels printed on the wrong side. Maybe you did this on purpose to make it flush with the rest of the panel?
The one from vans is intended to be recessed under the rest of the panel so you don't have as much problem with the control stick hitting the knobs at full deflection.
YupIf flush mounting the sub panel is working for you guys, more power to you, but there have been several people who've had issues during their AW inspection because the stick hit the knobs at full fwd/right aileron and the inspector wouldn't sign off on it that way. They had to either relocate the knobs or cut more off of the stick.
Here's a picture of a flush one that I pulled from the internet (I think it might be Jason Beaver's plane?) vs one from my plane in process a few years ago. The last picture is a screen shot of RV7&9 drawing 24.
If you flush mount that sub panel, the knobs are going to be about 3/4" further aft that Vans intended when they designed the layout and control throws.
Like I said, I know a lot of people do it that way, but people shoud at least be aware
Well I have a nice plate with all the labels for throttle, mixture, etc. with holes for the cables. I have no idea how I’m supposed to mount the cables to this plate.
Help?

I have the same plate. I drilled them to the correct hole size with a unibit. I made a plate on the forward panel bulkhead according to plans but with allowance for the unusual arrangement and secured the cables with adel clamps per plans. I did have to cut the sticks down. I even cut them a second time but maybe didn't need to. Wait until your wings are on and the control stops determined before cutting the sticks. The stops might make it unnecessary.
Note: The Van’s demo 9A stick hits the mixture control. My FWF supplied cables barely made it using the firewall holes per plans.
Makes sense if we are putting the plate on backwards!Yup
Not to mention all of the builders that have complained over the years about the engine control cables provided in their FWF kit were about 1 inch too short![]()
Not backwards, just differentOdd. That is backwards.
I don't have the exact number in front of me, but I cut the same amount off the stick that my Tosten military grip added for a net zero. Here is my DIY bracket from 20 years ago FWTW.
Curious question. What’s the length of your stick from the top of the socket to the top of the grip?
Some of these grips look really long compared to my simple Ray Allen.
Same here. Stick is net zero height as stock to the top of the Tosten grip.I don't have the exact number in front of me, but I cut the same amount off the stick that my Tosten military grip added for a net zero.
