Time for a new vision prescription - been a few years. SURPRISINGLY thorough exam at the Walmart down the street. Walk in. $96.
Poking around zennioptical.com on the recommendation of some thrifty pilot friends. You need to supply your PD (pupil distance) in millimeters along with your prescription(s). I got one bifocal prescription for normal iPhone usage/distance and another measured for the instrument panel/distance.
Trip to airport Wednesday for Whataburger Wednesday with the locals - got Monk to measure my pupil distance with dial micrometers. 2” 402/1000ths center to center. Threw that into Grok for the conversion and got 61.0108mm. Felt pretty proud of myself.
Zenni wanted me to download their app. Try on glasses virtually, etc. When I went to put in the PD, the app said to point the camera at my face. It measured 62mm in 2.5 seconds. Insane.
I ordered a pair of new bifocals yesterday for $76 tax title and license, including shipping. I’ll have ‘em in a week and a half. I’ll let you know if they stink. If they don’t, I’m ordering new prescription bifocal sunglasses. It’ll be nice to both look cool* and be able to read.
Have a happy, safe and RV-filled weekend.

Broken Pitot Tube FF-01202-1 (in flight)
While in a level cruise this afternoon, 118kt indicated, headwind of 16kt, left crosswind of 3kt, "airspeed, airspeed" screamed in the headset followed by "autopilot is being engaged" as the Garmin Electronic Stability and Protection system (ESP) turned on and pushed over the nose to begin a...

25 years ago today...
Google Photos reminded me that 25 years ago, January 7, 2001, I was priming RV-6 parts (gotta love SoCal). The green stuff is what we called "green death". It was left over from the 747 assembly line when they had to switch to water-borne primer in 1990-ish, so they had a ton of the old good...

First Flight: Mike Mitchell’s RV-14A | Charleston SC. RV-14A #140762
“Today was a good day” for Mike Mitchell and the first flight of his RV-14A. Here’s more of the story: Throughout the entire build process, the goal is always a completed and fully functional flyable aircraft yet the finish line seems to sometimes stretch beyond reach. Until the day you tell...

RV14 2nd Battery Location - opinions please!
I’m wanting to install a second battery on the firewall. The best location I can find is above the left hand firewall pass through (above the battery and starter contactor location). Behind this location is the big rib where the canopy gas struts mount. I looked at using the earth x battery...

Fuselage - Meet Wings!
So this happened today - the FIRST (but not last….) installation of the wings on the F1. We had a few neighbors stop in to help handle things, had a good safety briefing (“We don't want anyone getting pinched - call STOP if you see an issue!”), then stabbed both wings and installed a few drift...

VAF Charity Cap: Help your charity and promote this site.
Get the cap all the cool kids are wearing! I don’t get a penny. It’s around $15. $5 more if you want your N-number on the back (I put 'STAFF' on the back of mine because it makes me laugh. Put STAFF on yours too if it makes you smile). And down the road $10 to the charity of your choice...
