Reassemble RV7 from Shipping container - Houston / Southern TX area

Gen2Pilot

I'm New Here
Trying to get an idea of cost to reassemble a RV-7 that would arrive in Houston in a shipping container after having been professionally disassembled and packaged in Europe. Feel free to call or text for a more detailed description / conversation. 801-201-9964

Interesting question. I'd suppose it would take 1.5X the time to dissamble and pack because of replacing fasteners and such.

Will be watching for answers from people who may have done it.

I finished assembling my 7A after transporting to the hangar. Assuming every part and fastener is handy. I would guesstimate 16-24 man hours to assemble and connect all the controls and wiring.
That assumes you have all new bolts, washers, nuts. All controls were previously rigged corectly. Every cable was functioning. Probably incorrect estimate.

I would guess it depends on the level of disassembly. Certainty the wings would come off, but the landing gear as well? Did the empennage break down to individual surfaces?

I think Rob is correct (not to imply that Larry's incorrect...they may boil down to the same numbers).

I would double the 24= 48. Plus travel time and expenses.

Probably right. 48 sounds closer. 24 will be spent digging through plans and parts.

Funny, I had a rep as a Manager. They always asked how I did it.
Secretly, I always doubled manpower and budget estimates. So I always came in under budget and early. 😁

Guess I should have doubled that estimate too!

I was the king of sand bagging when I was on my tools. Now I can spot it instantly haha. E&I techs are the worst followed closely by rotating equipment millwrights. :D
To be fair, I saved them millions. When I took over, we still had all the old analog dial tone. 120 facilities so you can imagine how much that cost. Fax lines, alarms, elevators, etc. Even one $30/month phone line was a lot of money and some had 20 or more. I had a tech go out and pull one leg (Tip) off each circuit except for known critical infrastructure like alarms and elevators. If no one entered a work order, I issued a disconnect. If they asked, I had the circuit switched to internal system infrastructure. Saved a lot of money.
They pretty much let me do anything I wanted.

I’d suggest costing should include 2 return tickets & 1 weeks labor each plus expenses for the ‘professionals’ that originally disassembled & packed the plane. Only they know what they did or had to do to pull it apart.

There are bolts connecting the spar, flap, and aileron. Fuel lines and wires to the fuel tanks and wingtips. A pitot line and the wing to body fairing. Plus some reassembly of the interior removed to FOM

Thank you for all the replies and information. The only items removed will be the wings. I live in Utah, recommendations on a person/shop that could do this?

Just an idea.
Why not transport the container to your location?
You'd be around $2.5-2.7 per mile on a flatbed truck.

I think you would be very happy transporting the container to Utah. Take your time and get it right. I’ve found you get in a hurry when you have time constraints. If you have a3/4 ton pickup, you can probably transport it your self. 3 days from Houston to Salt Lake.

It took me a whole day to install the wings on my RV, and when I had it painted it took me 2 long days to get all of the flight controls installed. With some help. I would plan on a week of labor.
