Phenolic spacer - is it required?

Situation: I have a Titan IOX-370 with the Superior cold air sump and FM150 injection setup for my -8 build. While working on cowl fitment, I found that the lower cowl contacts the mixture control shaft on the FM150.

As delivered, my engine includes a 1/2" phenolic spacer between the sump and the FM150. Removing that spacer should gain me about 3/8" more clearance between that mixture shaft and the cowl, which is probably enough to solve my problem.

My question is, does that spacer serve any purpose other than just shifting the servo forward? That is, are there any ill effects from not having it? I've already tested the servo without the spacer, and there are no interference issues with linkages or anything like that.

My understanding is the spacer is a thermal insulator to prevent the oil temp-sump from heating the servo.

Don Rivera could quantify the effects to be aware of.
