Op63 (remote canopy release) and Section 59 (power module)

I’m planning out where to put my remote canopy release handle, and I had initially thought the bottom of the power module would be a good spot.

However, it seems my F-14188A Power module front plate is not the same as the one depicted in OP63? (It’s the same as in Section 59).

It’s like the cutout for the breakers is at the lower end of this plate, not the upper end? Leaving no way to attach the F-01452C cable mount plate? (It’s probably better for accessibility anyway that the breakers are lower down).

Has anyone else run into this?

In any case, I’m not convinced it’s a good place now anyway. It’s hard enough to get into where the fuel pumps are as it is.

Any other good spots people have found for the handle?

I was wondering if placed vertically on the seat cover plate might be an option? (On a removable plate perhaps).

That part has been changed to what is shown in OP63. You have a non current version of Sect 59. Note the -1 after the part #s which usually means they’ve been changed. Having said that, I think you’re lucky to have the older version as it will make the CBs more visible. The version you have is also no longer available. I just test fit mine (revised part as in OP63) and I can only see the bottom 2-3 rows of CBs. (6’ tall and seat in aft most position, Steinair throttle bracket)
As for the T handle location, my opinion is that it should be readily accessible from both seats. I’m about to mount my T handle and I’ll post some pictures when complete.

@TASEsq what did you end up going with? I have revision 0 F-14188A and wondering if those parts with work with OP63?

@mc607 did you happen to share any photos of your installation?

It seems like having it below the OP63 panel and in front of the fuel switch is a good location but I don't have seats in so a bit hard to tell.

This is where I put mine. The area is a bit flimsy but once you secure the Bowden cable in behind with an Adel clamp it’s solid.

In order to mount the Remote Canopy Release T-handle at the base of the fuse panel you have to use the revised F-14188A-1 as shown in OP-63 and trim the bottom off of it as shown on page OP-63-03.

If you are planning on putting it where the red dot is in post #4 (and in the photo in post #5), be sure you account for your throttle, prop and mixture cable routing (unless you are using a quadrant).

I did not have any issues with the cable routing. The canopy release cable just loops fwd, up and back aft to the release mechanism. Two Adel clamps. Very short run compared to the original configuration. I ain’t crawling back in there to take a picture, you’re gonna have to take my word for it.

T-handle in the F-14206 Wiring Channel looks better and better.

With an Airflow Performance fuel pump, using the F-01452B cable mount inset (cut into) F-01452 Aft Tunnel Cover,

causes CT A-1770 cable housing interference with fuel pump:

Yellow stripes are 3M 2080 vinyl; it was easier and faster than paint. We’ll see how it holds up.

Ordering the replacement aft tunnel cover now...

You can mount the Remote Canopy Release handle in other locations, just remember it may need to be operated by the person in the right seat in an emergency involving pilot incapacitation (i.e. after an accident). I recommend installing it as per the OP-63 instructions.

Flightchops installed his in the upper left corner of the instrument panel on his RV-14. It would be hard for a PAX to operate the RCR handle way over there.

“Stick to the plans” is a great recommendation: in this case OP-63 includes not only two primary mounting locations, but also provision for “… your alternate mounting location…” Placement in the wiring channel provides both occupants access to the t-handle.

While I'm integrating a relatively common aftermarket change, I’m also warning that an alternate fuel pump has other issues to consider. That’s the fun of systems engineering!
