Instead of digging into the aircraft to access your fuel filter, the ACF-400 allows external access from the bottom of the aircraft, making it possible to remove and inspect the filter in under a minute.

Is it required to drain the filter as part of the pre-flight inspection, in addition to draining the tank sumps?

Could this filter be installed inside the actual fuel tank, replacing the existing fuel drain?

1) Yes, I would add this to you pre-flight checklist.

2) As this filter is inline, going to your engine, I would not replace the existing fuel drains with it.

If you were to crash-land hard enough to remove the landing gear, that cap + drain would get sheared off and create a guaranteed fuel leak. Of course, you'd have other issues as well, but why add to potential fuel leaks?

This would be easily solved by adding a spacer so that all of the filter + drain is above the lower fuselage skin. Would be more aerodynamic too. You'd need a big socket to remove the bottom nut instead of channellock pliers, but so what. Have them custom-made and supply with the filter.

This is a very inviting convenience at a glance, but if compromised to effect failure it is potentially a substantial (pressurized) leak.

I have wing root filters installed on the RV-14. I think this is a good alternate solution for wing root filters as well. that is why I thought about having this unit installed inside the fuel tank. But I guess installing on the wing root cover fairing is also a good convenient serviceability option.


Congrats for the idea of this new product. I will consider installing 2 of these on my wing roots on my next annual. (easier to drain 2 at wing root than 1 at mid airplane belly).
