Kitplanes Magazine

Gary,
Thanks for catching my screw up. I've now corrected the original link.
No problem Charlie. You have helped me in the past so was just paying it forward.

I, like you, tend to save PDF copies of info for possible future use.

For those who have been around for a while you only need to look at the name of the CEO of Firecrown to understand what happened.

Back in the mid ‘80s Kitplanes Magazine on the newsstand was THE inspiration that got me involved in this aviation thing.
Sad to see this & maybe other aviation related publications disappear.
It just makes it that much harder to draw new folks to our diminishing aviation population without loosing this (though limited) public exposure.

Google's AI overview of this company says it all:

"Business Model: Firecrown's model involves acquiring established media brands, particularly in affluent enthusiast categories, and integrating them with commerce opportunities."

I've always been an avid Kitplanes reader; the feeling is like being part of a family of builders and enthusiasts, and I've learned a lot from these pages. I've always considered it a tool in the shop. This is the mess that comes from profit at all costs, especially when the business is in the hands of people who aren't specifically passionate about it. I hope someone with the 'right fire' will find the strength to continue, perhaps in a different way, the Kitplanes story.

The best known example is The Fields, the luxury fly-in community heavily advertised in Flying, as well as a few times in Kitplanes. In a 2024 business channel interview, Mr. Fuller claimed $28 million in lot sales over the previous nine months, at $150,000 to $500,000 per lot. That would be somewhere between 50 and 180 lots. However, apparently nothing was ever built, and two months ago the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported the project as scrapped. Fuller claimed costs had escalated, permitting took longer than anticipated, and banks lost their appetite for high-end real estate projects.

Hey Paul, whatever happened to the "make the same part four ways" article? It was a billet aluminum bracket, with fabrication ranging from basic hand tools to full CNC.

Naturally you gave me the caveman assignment...

That’s a good question! Think I might have run across the box with the parts that were made way back when…as I recall, the guy that was going to CNC it just made it like you did, and then someone said he’d 3D print it, and it never happened….dog ate my homework, there was an earthquake, locusts…..

I will definitely miss Kitplanes and hope someone/something takes its place. It’s the magazine I read cover to cover, and have for 20+ years. I just renewed my subscription on June 25 for two more years. I called them today to inquire about WHAT IS GOING ON! I told them what I’ve heard - the KP staff is gone, and the magazine might be gone too. She had my account subscription and information, and issued me a refund of my subscription, mostly. I received the August edition - first one in my new subscription - and I’ve received the refund of my 79.95 two year subscription minus the August magazine that I received ($4.00). I sure wish they were still in business……

There might be a lightly used IconA5 in distressed sale mode hit the market soon.

A market exists for the Kit Planes and the Aviation Consumer kind of product. The value of that product just tanked. I predict someone somewhere is going get it going again. The current owner might not be desperate yet.

Does anyone know if Tenly Ong finished her -6? I doubt the series of articles will be added to now.
Hi Jonny!

Thanks for asking about my RV-6 and series. It needs some more wiring work, canopy fitted, and we need to straighten the tailwheel out. Hoping for an engine start by the end of the year - I’ll be working on it a LOT in October. I won’t be continuing the series in KITPLANES. If anyone has recommendations for other magazines to continue it in, please let me know! I love sharing the story. 😊

Cheers,
Tenley and N2165U

Ah wow!!

Hey Tenly!

It’s been great series to follow, have loved reading about the trials and tribulations! It would be fantastic to see it through to first flight.

It’s a shame about Kitplanes, but hopefully you will find a new home for your articles. As Dan said, there’s always an interested audience here!

Good luck with the rest of it, hope to read about it sometime.

I'd sure like to see the series continue, wether here or EAA spot magazine etc. I've enjoyed the read! Reminds me a little bit of my -6 project.

March 2015 was the last issue of "EAA Experimenter" magazine. Sounds like there are enough contributing writers and editor from Kitplanes that maybe EAA could be talked into picking up the stories that Kitplanes use to publish. IF someone can make a financial plan on how the EAA could get more money and members, maybe EAA will listen and start publishing the magazine again. I would pay for a "Digital Only" subscription to the new "Experimenter" magazine with the old Kitplanes contributors and editor.

I think a relaunch of “The Experimenter” would be a great place to bring all these contributors together again.

After all, aren’t Kitplanes and Home builds the grass roots of the EAA?

EAA’s Bits and Pieces newsletter seems to be a natural place for technical content. An article was written about the triple redundancy of C-FWMB last year and then I did a followup with more technical detail. They are always looking for writers.

Awesome! I’ll look into that too - thanks Michael!

Wow, way more replies than I imagined - thank you all for the support and for reading my story! Haha I COULD post it on here 😂

Anyways - definitely going to look into the suggestions mentioned. :)

Happy flying!!

Double check this, but I think that Bits & Pieces is mostly (?) Canadian in its focus -- not on building techniques, of course...

Received my September issue of KITPLANES both digital and physical today. Appropriate that the cover is of the RV-15 with Paul's excellent article. And other good articles. Sad this will be the last issue........😞 Such a resource that I have used for many years. I'll miss seeing that in my mailbox..........

I got mine yesterday too. I didn’t expect that because I canceled my subscription and got a refund for my recent two year renewal. I guess it’s the last one. I think I’ll keep it for a while.

I guess I'm missing something, or am being naïve, but I got my September issue yesterday, too, and it sure looks like a viable magazine to me. And I can't find a word in it about this being the final issue. Did I miss that? (And how can they be advertising subscriptions if the magazine is dead?) How is everyone so sure?

Are we just not going to get another copy next month, or even a notice of some kind? Strange.

And yes, this is the only magazine I read, too.

The magazine isn't "dead," it's just never going to be the same given the new direction in content creation by the owners and the exodus of all of the talent.

The publisher hasn't said Kitplanes is dead. The staffers resigned or were terminated, and many contributors will drop out. However, the publisher has declared an intent to continue. Is it practical? We'll see.

There is a lot of lead time between submission and publication. The issue now in your mailbox is the last put together by the folks you know.

Thanks, I guess that explains it - they'll still be publishing, just with AI writers I guess. It'll be interesting, then, to see what they say next month. Truly sad, but maybe something useful can rise from the ashes, and the content can be revived. This might be happening with AvBrief. Fingers crossed.

The September issue was being finalized while we were all at Airventure together, and represents the last issue that the long-time editorial, production, and contributor team put together. It takes time for magazines to get from “final” to the “printer” and then to distribution, which is why you’re seeing a lag.

I have no idea what Firecrown is going to do with the title from here on out - we’ll all just have to wait and see what happens.
