Horizontal stabiliser spar caps

Hi all,

I’m just getting into the horizontal stabiliser on my build and have started preparing the spar caps for the HS1002 rear spar. I’ve noticed that the spar caps sit proud of the spar flange by around 1/16” of an inch, whereas I was expecting them to be flush as they were on the vertical stab.

It’s going to take a long time to remove the material along the length of both spar caps so I wanted to check before I go any further whether anyone else has found the same, and if I should be concerned?

Thanks as always!
Matt

Hi Matt

I never noticed these being proud, but I certainly didn't remove any material. If you do a trial assembly, I expect you'll find that it all fits together ok. I wouldn't remove any material without checking with Vans first.

On the -8, the instructions call for rounding off the inner corner to match the web radius. I imagine the -10 instructions and plans to be more detailed and address this, no? Either case, all parts should fit flush with no gaps..

It’s not a problem. The radiuses match and if you look very closely at the plans you’ll notice the rear edges of the spar caps are indeed proud of the rear edges of the spar flanges.
Make sure you clamp liberally as directed and ensure there are no chips left over after you’ve drilled the WEB.
So drill the web, remove debur thoroughly before re clamping and drilling the flange holes.

Thanks Richard - this is how mine looks and clearly from your photo it won’t affect assembly of the next parts so I will build on!
