"EZ Cowl" 3D Printed Jig

I'm just getting ready to deal with the cowl fitting. I didn't have the PVC or plastic bits on hand to make the EZ Cowl jig, and I didn't want to spend $400 on the super nice machined ones, so I decided to 3D print it instead. TBD if it works, but for less than $10 in filament, worth a shot. I did the math (hopefully) and made the jig the right depth to account for the 2 1/4" spacer (using a Sensenich GA prop), spinner backplate, 1/4" cowl gap, etc, so it should be the right size to set the cowl nose bowl in the right place. In hindsight, I should have printed some arms off of the sides to allow for clamping to the disc that attaches to the cowl. I'm just going to use a nice flat piece of plywood or MDF for the matching disc that is clecoed to the cowl. I was a little uncertain that just using a piece of scrap 1" dowel for the center locating pin would be stiff enough, but it's a snug fit and perfectly square - plenty strong to hold the cowl in place.

Happy to share the file if anyone wants it (FYI - the bolt holes are sized for 1/2" bolts, but I could make a 7/16" version easy enough if necessary). For thickness changes, you could easily just make up any differences you need by stacking wood on top of the printed part.

Looks nice Brandon.

You are able to rent the super nice one from Blake at Flyboys as well. Its what I used. Started as a rental then eventually I owned it ...Slow builder and all. Sold for what I paid for it minus shipping.
Just another option.

It's important that the dowel be stiffly-mounted, because the cowl-holding disk (not shown but necessary) attaches to and supports the front of the cowl.

It's not often included because of it's shipping cost, I think.

Also note that HFS has been distributing low-cost versions and those are often available free. In fact, I recently sent mine off to another builder. All it cost him was shipping for the cowl disk.

Hi, Dave! Hi, John!

I was worried about the dowel being solid enough, but it's a very snug fit and I can move the entire plane around with it, so given the minimal weight of the cowls, it should be fine.

What's HFS? I tried to find someone local who had a jig I could borrow, but no luck. Given they are largely one time use items, I imagine there are many floating around. Maybe an option for Doug to have a forum section for all of the misc "floating tools" available for the cost of shipping and promise to send to another builder when done?

Hey Blake,

Any chance you'll sell access to the STL file for those of us who love to print our own stuff?

Thanks,
