Checker board flaps

What was your method.............?
My method was the same as I used on the rudder, painted the white first then used 1/16 3m trim tape for layout blocked off the white sq , scuffed paint for the black used Ranthane paint.

did you have to cut individual squares or is there a pattern available?
 
The pattern comes pre-cut and laid out on a single sheet It’s sandwiched between the non-stick backing and a Transparent cover sheet with its own adhesive.
It is applied like a big giant decal. Then the transparent cover sheet is pulled off.
They made me some caution decals. Each letter is individually cut so the entire decal comes out as an intricate stencil as opposed to a sticker:
