Anyone in Reno with an RV4

MTcowboy

I'm New Here
I’m in Reno for a month working on my instrument rating. Been considering buying an rv4 but I want to sit in one before I get too serious. Bigger guy 6’3 235lbs. Anyone near Reno that would be willing to let me try? Bonus points if you’ll take me for a ride, if you can with my weight 😃 I’ll pay fuel

Six foot three at 235 will be an extremely tight fit in the back seat and darn near the aft cof g if not aft of it.

At 5'9" & 168#'s my RV-4 is a tight fit, it's a squeeze for entry/exit and DON'T drop your cellphone in flight, consider it lost until reaching a stopping point. Also not much length for stretching out legs on long flights. Your mileage may vary but there's little space between my headset & canopy, although a sunshade probably takes up a couple of inches of clearance.

With that said it is a hoot to fly!

I'm in SLC, UT so when you're headed home from Reno, you're certainly welcome to stop by KSVR and sit in mine to check fit. There is some truth to the saying you wear an RV-4...and yeah, even with an IO-360/CS prop we'd likely be way past a safe CG at our combined weights + fuel.

Good to know! Thanks for the info. I figured w&b might be a limiting factor… Thanks for the offer, I’ll stay in touch and may come try yours on!

Clearly, it's a matter of opinion and what one is used to but but at 5'9" and 255 lbs, I think there is plenty of room in the front seat my RV-4. It isn't a 1970's Cadillac but plenty of room to reach things, move from one side of your bum to the other on those long flights, and so forth. I have hinged floor panels to the left and right of the stick and accessing things in those compartments is quite doable. The negative, IMO, is sitting upright and how that wears on you after several hours. I sit as high as possible (thick seat cushion) and a five point harness that gets tightened up when very bumpy to avoid smacking my head on the canopy (though that still happens from time to time). My backseat weight limit is 165# and there is less space available back there. My wife is quite petite and reports that she is pretty comforable and doesn't feel wedged in.

At 6'3", I would expect you would need to move the seatback/rollbar aft a bit. There are some discussions about that in the archives. I don't think it is a small job but not certain.
