All, I have an 8 that the original builder powered with a Mazda Rotary. I quickly realized that this wasn't for me and purchased a IO-360A1B6. However, I have a sweet three-bladed MT electrically actuated prop from the rotary build that seemed to work pretty well. My research shows that it will work on the engine, but i will obviously have to block the governor and plug the hallow crank to use it. The next option is to sell it and pony up much more $$$ for a hydraulic prop. Has anyone ever plugged a crank to run a fixed pitch or electrically actuated prop? If so, what was your experience? Also, where do you acquire the required parts? Direct from Lycoming? Thanks in advance!

It’s not difficult. I chose to pierce the back plug in order to prevent pressure build up inside the hollow part of the crank, reducing the likelihood of pushing out the front plug. If that plug comes out you will lose all oil pretty fast.
I used a socket centered on the plug to set it and was happy with the results. Do some research on it, I found it to be straight forward.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! If you ever wanted to go costant speed how hard would it be to reverse these changes? Any idea how you deal with the prop governor? My engine came with one installed.

You can take off the governor and replace it with a cover plate. To go back from fixed you need to change two things on the crank snout. Removing the front plug involves punching a hole in it to pull it off. Then the aft set screw plug needs to be installed.
