[ed. Screengrab from my iPad below the embedded vid. My part time gig at the sim just got easier (fewer screen changes - faster changes of approaches). v/r,dr]

Introducing Dynamic Procedures, a new way to view, brief, and fly instrument approach procedures in ForeFlight. Access all of the information you need to execute an approach in one clean, interactive sidebar, making single-pilot IFR operations more streamlined than ever before.

In this webinar we will demonstrate all the features available within Dynamic Procedures including loading approaches through Procedure Advisor, setting minimums, streamlined briefing, integrated 3D airport views, crystal clear per-segment route guidance, and so much more!

00:00 - 02:53 Intro and Housekeeping
02:54 - 05:31 – ForeFlight’s historical methods of mapping
05:31 - 05:32 – Introduction of Dynamic Procedures, and how pre-composed charts came to be
09:06 - 10:52 – How to download the most current version of ForeFlight
10:53 - 26:25 – How to access and use Dynamic Procedures
26:25 - 36:36 – ILS Approach into KATL with Dynamic Procedures
36:37 - 38:23 Circling Approaches with Dynamic Procedures
38:24 – More Resources & Q&A

This looks so obvious now that I've seen it - great work by these suppliers in coming up with this kind of innovation - impressive!

I attended a webinar on this yesterday. It looks nice. I'm working on my instrument rating now, and will give them a try. Anything that can simplify things in the cockpit during single pilot IFR, is a good thing.

I didn’t get all the way through the video but I upgraded FF and did a simple flight plan. I see some good features but at first glance it seems that Garmin Smart Charts does a much better job of simplifying the approach plate.

It looked to me like the actual “plate” hasn’t changed in FF. Do I need to download new approach charts for FF.

Hi Rick. Did you ‘Hide Chart’? Shown at 32min 55sec at the webinar link.

Negative new approach plates. Simplified waypoints with altitudes displayed on the existing chart (until you don’t want the chart displayed.

May not be what you were asking about, but it’s what I *thought* you were asking about LOL. Changing approaches easier for me now IMHO.

I watched more of the video as far as the flight into Atlanta. I guess I was expecting something more akin to Smart Charts but it looks like the new Sidebar gives you all information you need, so you really don’t need to view the “plate” after the approach is loaded. The side bar along with the map give all the info needed to fly the approach.

Kinda how I felt too, Rick. The sidebar coupled with the profile view up top is 99% of the stuff I want in front of me on an EFB. MFD map gives me the rest.

Garmin is redesigning what amounts to a plate, whereas ForeFlight is coming up with a solution which seems to lead towards not requiring a plate at all. Thus, while seeming similar on the surface, they really are two different product offerings.

FF appears to still require the chart, as noted in the screen grab above that says, “Verify with chart”. Garmin Smart Charts appears to not require the chart at all, which is why you can hide it completely and only use the Smart Chart. I attended the Garmin Seminar on Smart Charts at OSH. Very helpful and insightful.

FF suggesting a verification with the approach chart is them being conservative. There’s no regulation that requires a chart for Part 91.

The closest that there is to requiring a chart is 14 CFR § 91.103 (the "preflight familiarization" rule) which requires that the pilot in command be familiar with all pertinent information for the flight—not that a specific chart (Jeppesen, NOS, or otherwise) must be onboard. So, even today, there’s nothing that requires any specific chart to be onboard to use ForeFlights Dynamic Procedures feature. If you’re comfortable replacing NOS or Jeppesen charts with it, that’s your prerogative.

Garmin has simply chosen to omit this language from their feature, however it’s no more (or less) legal to use in place of an approach chart published by the government or Jeppesen.

You can hide the approach chart in the ForeFlight feature and solely use Dynamic Procedures, just as you can in Garmin Pilot and use SmartCharts.
