Garmin GTX-345 Static Source

I'm getting mixed signals on providing the static source to the GTX-345. I have heard that you can connect the static line directly to the transponder and others say that you need a altitude encoder like the Garmin GAE-12 or some other RS-232 unit. I have also seen that people say that if you pull out the transponder that you have to recheck the static system for leaks. This sounds like the static line has a direct connection. Which is true and what is the best option? Thanks, Tom

Never seen a xpdr with integrated encoder. The GAE module mounts to the back of the rack of the 345 and is wired to the xpdr.

Does the GTX 45R work similarly or does it use input from the GSU 25?
You can use a GAE 12 with a GTX 45R as well, but it's only necessary to do this in countries where a separate encoder is required. If you're in the US you don't need to mess with this.

Interesting. How does the GTX 45R get static/pressure altitude information?
