Wing, platenut, rivets slightly proud

RV-14A, page 13-03, there is a note right before step 2 that says "countersink just deep enough to fit the head of an AN426AD3 rivet". I did that (even impressed myself with how perfectly flush they all are!).

Step 8 says to spot-prime all of those countersinks. I dabbed some Rustoleum self-etching primer in each hole with a q-tip.

Riveting two platenuts, I see that the manufactured heads of all 4 rivets sit slightly proud.

How much of a concern is this? Should Icountersink with an additional 1/1000, spot-prime and see how that fits? Add another 1/1000 if still proud?

not a concern, but rec a little more countersink so no OCD regrets. functionally likely fine, but irritating

And I suppose priming and painting will more likely hide it than amplify it?

The same thing happened on my Rv7A wing spars. I was so worried about over countersinking and screwing up the spars. I got them perfectly flush but when I primed the holes, it made a lot of the rivets proud. I spoke with tech support and was told it’s not an issue. If I could do it over, I would’ve gone another thousandths or two.

Use number 3 oops rivets and deburring tool will remove enough material to countersink them. Much less time required. They are not structural and they don't need to be.

And this is probably why. The thickness of the paint.

I just floated some alodine in there and let it do its work, then cleaned off after a few minutes with a wet rag, top and bottom of the flange.

Those are proud way more than a thou or two; probably 10, but hard to say from a pic. I would dab the primer in and set it while still wet. The primer is pooling, then drying, leaving a solid that is making an irregular surface. Not just sitting proud, but possibly not making full contact.

Try just using alodine.

Yea, the photo really seemed to exaggerate it. They are not nearly as bad as that looks!
