STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (2019)

During our move from Amarillo (AMA) to Idaho Falls (IDA), the wife and I decided to camp in Durango, Colorado. The Durango/Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad goes right through the campground. The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from Southwest Colorado's San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized they could ride into the remote, scenic wilderness and high-mountain landscape of Colorado’s San Juan National Forest. This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock. We chose to ride the Alamosa parlor car that has tiny individual tables and chairs. I was sporting a new logo Vans Aircraft ball cap. On the way up to Silverton, I heard the young lady sitting literally inches behind me say “Should we inquire about the Van’s hat?” I turned around and asked if they were familiar with Vans Aircraft. The response surprised and astounded me. The young couple said they had flown to Durango in the RV-8! ....and were building a second RV-10. That lead to RV discussions while we enjoyed the ride and the scenery. What are the chances? Well, pretty good it would seem. Read on….

JOSEPH OREGON VACATION (2023)

While on vacation at Wallowa Lake State Park near Joseph, Oregon, the wife and I visited the local farmers/flea/craft/market event. Again, sporting a Vans Aircraft ball cap, I heard a lady say “What kind of RV do you have?” Since we were camping, I thought she was asking about my travel trailer. Nope, she and her husband own a Vans RV-7A. She encouraged us to drive to JSY airport and visit her husband and the RV. He’s here on VAF.

DENVER RTB (2026)

When returning home from burying my sister, my first United flight was delayed and I missed my connecting flight in Denver. While using ground transportation, my wife and I helped another couple load their skis and luggage into the hotel shuttle. We later encounter the couple in the hotel restaurant and struck up a casual conversation. I don’t remember how the conversation came around to building airplanes, but again I engaged with a random stranger that is building a kitplane! This time he was building a Sonex, which with the recent news is unfortunate.

Moral of the story? LOGO UP! VAF hats, Vans sport shirts. (Donate to Doug R for VAF) You never will know if that person right next to you is building an airplane too and you need to talk to them.

A few years back, Louise and I had flown into Spokane (commercial) with all our ski gear, rented a car, and were driving north to Banff. Flight was late, so we were driving across the border on a two-lane highway about midnight. Lonely one-building crossing, no traffic either direction. the friendly Canadian border fellow took our passports, asked where we were headed, said “oh yeah…great skiing!” Then he did a double-take at my passport and said “you’re Paul Dye…from Kitplanes!?” Yes, I admitted…. “Well I’ve got three aircraft I built and fly…follow your stuff all the time!” We talked airplanes for a minute on that dark and lonely highway, then he said “have a great time in Canada!” And we were on our way….

You meet folks everywhere!

I was out for my morning walk recently and saw a trimaran being assembled in a driveway. Since I'd owned a different trimaran pre-RV-3B project, I walked over to have a look. The owner saw my VAF cap and asked if it was for Van's Aircraft. Turns out he'd interned there. We had a good boat and airplane discussion.

When I covered STS-134/135 for Fly RC Magazine I wore my EAA hat, during the photo op in the VAB while stacking Atlantis some guys came over to the press pen and asked about it. They were RV builders/pilots, I had just started building my SeaRey, and we talked airplanes and kit building and flying. TLWT, but they invited me to tag along with them walking through the VAB, then got me permission to enter the secure zone around Atlantis. http://sts134launch.blogspot.com/2011/05/careful-with-that.html

WOW! Awesome pictures

My wife went for a job interview at a local car dealership and somehow it came up that I was an airline pilot. The interviewer (and now her boss) said he had built and owns an -9A. My wife told him about my -6 and she was hired on the spot!

Also had a fellow pilot from my company in the jump seat years ago who said he like to bid reserve so he could stay at home and work on his RV project. We talked a lot that flight (I had just finished mine) but didn't stay in touch, though I'm told he has finished it now.

Saturday I was sitting at a bar watching the Fort Lauderdale Air Show (a very meh show imho) and heard a South African accent behind me. Turned around to ask him what he thought of the Springbok's chances next year in Rugby World Cup (pretty good we all agreed). Turned out to be a table of pilots getting some sim time down in Miami, one of whom flies an RV-8 on an airshow team called the Ravens (not the UK team).

Many beers were consumed. It was lekker!

Maybe not RV related, but at one point I was the nutritional advisor for a rock star. We were on vacation at a resort in Hawaii and one morning I was in line at the smoothie bar. I had just finished making mine (ginger and pinapple) and Gene Simmons from Kiss was next to me at the omelet station. He said "that looks good." I said "yeah, you should try one."

Last year, I sat next to a Lycoming representative. I asked him how anyone can afford their engines these days. He said that many builders just take out a second mortgage on their homes to make the purchase. Seemed like a risky way to buy these engines.

I was on OSH for a Fall VAA Board meeting and we all mostly stayed in the same hotel. Pretty common to get on the elevator with someone you knew. One day, coming down from the 8th floor, stopped on the 7th and this tall, elderly gentleman got on and made sure the second-floor button was pushed. Just some tall guy. He had on a name tag, but I couldn't see it until someone got off before we did and he turned to let them out. Oh: just Dick VanGrunsven. I usually stay quiet when I have a chance encounter with well-known people as I usually don't really have anything intelligent to say and don't want to intrude into their not so quiet lives. Um.....thanks for designing really cool airplanes, Van..... I have been semi famous at various times in my life and have had awkward encounters with people I didn't know while trying the entire time to figure out if I actually KNEW this person or not. Ask me some time about my 15-minute conversation with Dick Rutan when I was in Mojave wandering through his hangar at Advance Composites with the first two LongEZs he had built (a LONG time ago!). Being a pole holder for Sean D Tucker about the 4th year of his aerobatic touring career when he toured with one support person. (I have the certificate to prove it!) Or running into John Denver sitting alone in a park in Aspen......

Doug: We need an eye-rolling emoji in the Like button choices.....

20 years as NASA Flight director, no love, best selling book author, who cares, but KITPLANES? Celebrity baby!!

A few years ago we were going up the elevator at the dorms during Oshkosh. The guy next to us was in a jumpsuit with a U-2 patch. We starting talking and he told us he was ground crew for the U-2 that was doing the airshow flyover. They had flown non-stop from the Sacramento area. He said he lived in the Sacramento area, was a pilot and owned and flew an RV(8?).
