I just bought an E RV-12. On the Dynon Skyview it shows “Cal?” Which I have learned means I need to calibrate the AOA. Before I go ahead and do that I want to make sure I actually have the AOA probe mounted on the airplane. I’ve read that on other model RV’s it’s mounted under the wing, but for obvious reasons, that’s not where it is on the 12. Can someone advise me where to look for the AOA probe or is it possibly the same as the pitot tube that’s mounted on the spinner? I’m assuming that because I received the indication it needs to be calibrated that the probe is actually installed. Maybe that’s an incorrect assumption?

The RV-12is has an AOA port installed on the left wing. You can an find it in Section 17-03 Step 3.
To my understanding it’s a poor man’s AOA probe without any moving parts. I expect the Dynon to calculate the AOA from the difference between the pitot pressure and the AOA pressure from the left wing. Pretty much the same system as some pitot tubes have it integrated.
I haven’t started with the avionics, so I can’t tell you anything about calibration.

If I’m not mistaken Glen, you have an original RV12, not an iS? If so, AOA is not something that should have been installed when the air worthiness certificate was issued as an E-LSA. As such, best bet might be to look through any logs to see if it was installed. As others have stated it’s on the left wing for iS models, but for legacy RV12 that doesn’t necessarily apply.
