What is This (the one the left)?

I know the right is my fuel tank vent but what is the one on the left? On my preflight over the weekend I noticed that the the little plastic piece that used to protrude out of there is gone now. It must have fallen off in flight because it wasn't laying on the ground anywhere.

My guess would be an OAT sensor or abandoned antenna. Pull an access panel and reach inside.

vacuum break for tank vent
This would be the same as the anti-siphon, right? So if I understand this right, there could be fuel fumes getting back into the tail section of the plane? Is it something to where the plane shouldn't be flown at all until it's fixed?

Ok - So I'm GUESSING because you did not specify plane model.... is it an RV-8A (based on gear leg style & position) ? If it is, then likely these are BOTH fuel tank vents - one for Left tank and one for R tank. From image these appear to be "in-line" fwd & aft as opposed to Left & right... very hard to tell. Clear images & model etc specific info is VERY helpful to allow people on forum to help you efficiently.

I didn't tell which model because I posted in the RV12 specific forum but it is an RV12.

I used Van’s rivet with the stem removed for this anti-siphon line fitting. If your’s has a plastic piece on it the builder did something different than the plans. Yes you might get some gas smell. Usually this happens when the line falls off the rivet . Only way to now is to take the cargo area bulkhead cover off and repair.

Nasty looking belly.... I would be embarrassed to show that!
I do need to get some mineral spirits and clean the belly, no doubt about it. I clean the top side of the plane regularly but need to get down there and do the underside very soon.

Try Simple Green Extreme...ok for aircraft (plain Simple Green is NOT)...Mineral spirits will get it done, but I don't think laying under your plane with mineral spirits dripping down on you is a good idea

Ever tried Belly Soap? I remember reading good things about it a while back.
