What did you do with your RV this weekend? (October 13-15 2022)

… getting this week's thread started.

Friday was my 40th high school reunion down in Waco, so I flew the RV down there from Dallas (35min), and Eddie from Jag Aviation (FBO) drove me to where everyone was gathered (Uber wanted $60). I bought gas :) .

Visited some old friends, caught up on some memories and flew back home around 11 PM for an easy night landing on 35. The AeroLEDs landing light upgrade a couple years back was appreciated.

Got to sleep in my own bed and didn’t have to spend four hours on the road round-trip. Autopilots are pretty neat. VNAV too.

Spent a good long while during the events on Friday talking to the husband of a girl that I’ve known literally all my life - grew up one street over. He’s interested in building an airplane. Guess what we talked about? I did work in, "However hard you think it will be, it will be ten times harder." All the hard work makes for a nice traveling platform, though. Love this RV.

About to leave on Friday…

The route:

On the ramp at KPWG (McGregor, TX). Where I got my first airplane ride as a kid - circle of life and all that.

The single pic I took. The girl with the long blonde hair and black shirt on the far right sat on our couch in college and broke it (there were 8 other people on it already, to be fair, and it was a pretty rotten couch).

Headed back home after three glasses of tea and a burger. Got to sleep in my own bed.

(and then I did it again on Saturday. Link: https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?p=1718617 )

I enjoyed a great scenic flight in South Cali with Marc (Plummit) in his amazing RV10. Lots of amazing views and now I must fly down here in my own RV10 :)
Marc, Thank you very much for this flight!

...and then I did it again on Saturday.

…to go to the 2nd half of my 40th HS reunion. Did the math, and two trips down/back was cheaper then staying in a hotel two nights.

52F - KPWG - 52F.

OK, back to our story…this time Saturday. Clicking any pic makes it bigger.

DFW airport off the left wing and Dallas skyline off in the distance on the way down.

You can see the (blue) step climbs getting out of the class B (bumpy as the squiggly line shows). VNAV descent. Of note, you can see the little bump in cruise when I set the BARO to KACT.

196kt GS (225.4 mph). 25kt tailwind. I paid for it on the way back.

On the ramp, KPWG. Beautiful Oct Texas sky (in the 60’s).

Picture from Fri that got airdropped to me. Really sweet people.

Trip back. 30kt headwind all altitudes. Again note BARO setting in cruise and 200’/min descent to get under the class B shelf. Tried to conserve some of my groundspeed.

Headed home. Dallas lights on the horizon.

Jeff Willingham (L), me and Mike Cooper (R). Haven’t seen Jeff in 20+ years and reconnecting with my HS friend was the highlight of the weekend. He lives on the east side of the country now. So glad to get his contact info. Mike on the right played drums in our HS power trio. We were so professional we didn’t even have a name. We were know as ‘the band’ to the five people that thought we had it going on (we were three of the five). LOL.

Life is good, and it’s made better (I think) with this wonderful RV-6 traveling machine. It made the weekend so much less tiring.

I took my RV-12is that first flew this summer for the first long cross country, with my daughter. The trip was from Tracy to Torrance (KTCY - KTOA) to attend the Moto-Art Studios Planetag Fest. We have casually started collecting these over the years by picking them up at Reno Air Races, Oshkosh, etc. The event was great time with food, drinks, music, and a bunch of airplane nerds trading tags and bidding on historic aircraft memorabilia. The kid wants to grow up and fly for a living, so taking off together to do airplane stuff in an airplane we built in the garage is like a dream come true. Admittedly I'm a little rusty in airspace this complex and busy, but with the avionics in the 12is and her as FO it was a piece of cake.

Seven of us from the Sacramento area RV14 builders group flew out at the crack of dawn to Dead Cow Lakebed, NV to watch the solar eclipse and bush plane STOL races at the High Sierra Fly In. It was partially overcast when we got there, but we were able to catch glimpses of the eclipse during breaks in the clouds. The STOL drags started shortly after the eclipse. We got front row seats to watch the bush planes (and 1 RV) race up and down the parallel landing strips. Lots of dust and fun was had by all!

Looks like a great reunion! So good to see people you haven't seen for such a long time! However: thankful for name tags! Good-looking class! Make it a point to stay in touch with those you "found" again! Too easy not to after the celebration. Just attended my.....what year was that?......reunion. Some people I haven't seen since graduation!. Now to keep that contact going!

What did you play in The Band? [ed. Bass and vocals. v/r,dr]

Great way to get there and back! RV-6 Magic Carpet Ride! Love these airplanes!

Used the plane for traveling this weekend.
Attended another vintage motorcycle show/ swap meet in Denton NC.
Flew out Thursday evening behind a serious low pressure and tornado warnings in the area. Had to fly 50 miles out of the way to get around the mess.
Good day spent Friday buying parts and socializing.

Visited the Aviation Museum in Asheboro NC while waiting on the rain to let up Saturday morning.
Left with a 500' ceiling and reached gorgeous skies @ 6k for a good ride home but 38kts headwind part of the way.
I knew about the eclipse but didn't even notice it while flying as I forgot to look.

Smoke On London Kentucky

London Kentucky has an airport open house and Invited Smoke On Aviation this year. Luke Carrico from Oshkosh announcer fame was on hand and did a great job. The weather prevented all but us and Swamp Fox P51 from showing up, but the crowd still very much enjoyed it. Great to see Airports have events such as this so the public feels welcome to the local airports.

Man after my own heart! Montana has too many as well. But sometimes one can find a decent stretch of road.....

Power lines? Fly under 'em if you have to..... :p

Solar Eclipse- Nevada run

Didnt quite make it to Battle Mountian for the Eclipse path due to clouds above 14K while VFR on top. Best phone pic was below the clouds.
Nice trip nonetheless.
