Took a little joyride around the neighborhood this morning. We've had a prolonged tree color season here, with many maples turning bright red about a month ago, while other trees are just now at peak. There seem to be larger swatches of bright yellow than in previous years. It is always a bit stunning to see the transformation each fall.

Since many RV guys are also boat lovers (well, the aluminum ones anyway :D), the second picture is of the Lund Boat factory complex owned now by Brunswick (directly above the wing). Crestliner Boats also made there, or at least some. Impressive for a town of 1300 people!

Labour Weekend here, so Monday was a Public Holiday.

Saturday morning we lauched out of Cromwell Airfield and headed north via the Hasst Pass and up the coast, landing in Westport. The last time the wife and I were there together in an aeroplane was the night of her 21st Birthday, which was spent campling on the floor of the airport "Terminal" - a shack, back then 30 years ago. We ended up there due to bad weather that time, but this time the weather was lovely. After refueling we headed to Karamea for the night, walking the 2.5 km to the accommodation. On Sunday we had hoped to head to Blenhiem however a warm front over the east coast meant it was better to stay on the sunny western side of the Main Divide. Instead we did a scenic flight up to Kahurangi Point Lighthouse, then headed back to Haast. As we were sitting at 8,500 feet I decided not to land at Haast and instead just tracked direct to Cromwell and 2.4 hours later we were back at home base. On Monday we headed to Rangiora and back to visit relatives... 1.2 hours up and 1.3 hours back at 8,500 feet where it was smooth as glass and the views were stunning. In total an enjoyable 7.5 hours for the weekend for a total of approx. 240 litres of fuel (about 32 litres/hr on average).

Everyone here appreciates the performance of these aircraft and the ability to travel long legs or just tool around the local patch having a blast. Certainly I've been doing plenty of the latter so it was great to get out and do some longer touring. I'm loving this aircraft and its everything I had hoped it would be.

Photos:

Just north of Kahurangi Point where we turned around and headed back south.
Fresh snow down south
The end of the road... almost. Walking along the main street amoungst the hustle and bustle of Karamea.
The Rakaia River, looking up into Lake Coleridge.
Mount Cook pokes up through to clouds to enjoy the sun.
I'm a believer! (the alternative way to fly around - but reliant on the presence of rainbows.)
Refuelling at Westport - with its new "terminal" upgrade.

Weather in the UK has been, shall we say, variable lately. With storm Babet bringing rain and flooding to much of the country. But Sunday bought a brief ridge of high pressure, so I did a short trip to Hinton in the Hedges to join with my friend Rogier to do an RV-8 two ship trip to Beccles in Suffolk for lunch and then Leicester. Both great friendly airfields. Managed a bit of air-to-air en-route.

McKenzie River Trail

Flew into McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S) and met my Sister for a 6 mile hike along the McKenzie River Trail.
This strip is in a deep bowl in the Cascade mountains, and pretty rough. But worth it - the trail and river are right there and so beautiful.

I was working this weekend, so did not get a chance to fly the RV at all. Actually, until today, I had not flown it in two weeks. Such is life with a job!

This morning I took the RV out of the hangar and went to get gas at the self-service pumps (no full serve at my airport). Pump inop. Looked like it was stuck in some reboot loop or something. No problem, that's why I always land with plenty of fuel (although I am 2 for 2 with this pump being inop). So I head over to an airport "next door," and buy fuel for $.80/gallon cheaper, and I get an extra leg/landing in the RV. Seems like a great deal.

Left the airport that I fueled at and met up with some friends at an airport 30 miles south. After 90 minutes or so, I headed back to the hangar.

Three landings, just over an hour of fun flying, and 7 gallons of fuel used. Hard to beat.

Very nice! All the red on that screen would make my wife nervous!

I was wondering what the white "gear" handle was on the panel.... A retractable RV.......:D

I get a lot of questions about that - it's a radar selector that an army friend on UN patrol in the western Sahara desert pulled out of Pelican 16, a 1957 Avro Shackleton 4-engine patrol aircraft that was restored and flown by members of the South African EAA, but crash-landed at night in the desert en route to a fly-in (all survived). Quite a story in fact. Anyway the selector currently serves more humble duty as defroster fan switch.
