WDYDWYRTW? (7/20-21/2024). Weekend before OSH'24.

Flew into Osh.

12.4 hobbs hours from Los angeles with stops in four corners and lincoln neb. Left at 530 am before fog arrived. Mostly at 17.5 k. Had to dodge a few building thunderstorms over rockies, but no big deal. Longest leg was 500+ nm.
Missed thursday arrival by 1 min. Tower tried for a waiver but I was denied.
160 kts on extended base for 36 from 5.5k to 1.8k, low fuel trying to beat clock. ( not exaggerating)

Ended up going to Fond Du loc for thursday night. Got there a little after 800. Uber app crashed. Hiked 3 miles ( uphill:-IMG_6528.jpegIMG_6472.jpeg) to Hampton Inn. Next morning hike 3 miles back to airport and joined congo line into Osh at 830am.
Arrival was easy peasey. Followed plane in using Otto set to heading and altitude hold mode, using steering knob to follow RR tracks. Adsb in was great because I could see plane in front was exactly 1 mile, and nobody behind. Got 27 green dot. Taxi back to HBC was thru the rough grass. Seems 36 would have been a better choice.

Cant wait for leaving congo line with fuel preheat for that stumbling on takeoff. Should be fun!

Congratulations! You made it!

I seldom fly longer than two hour legs to keep the orthopedics happy and so that if the gas pump card reader is broken, or the hose is jammed, or they don’t sell gas on weekends - all of which I’ve encountered - I can go somewhere else and still land with an hour in the tanks. With stops to visit folks along the way, it was six legs from Savannah.

The most interesting leg was flying through a weather front advertised as full of lions and tigers and bears, oh my. I was IFR at 4,000 just below the clouds with 20 miles visibility in every direction. I could see the cells on ADS-B and see the widely scattered rain shafts, so it was pretty easy. But on this leg, as I was watching the weather develop, I changed destination twice. Landed behind the front with two hoursIMG_4281.jpeg in the tanks. Easy, but I had lots of options, including climbing and slogging it through the hard IFR if I needed to.

Glad to be here!

Started trip at 0dark00 Friday morning at KGYR. Overnighted in El Dorado, KS. Dodged an incoming morning cell and entered Green Lake arrival a bit after Bonanza mass arrival. Light traffic entering with traffic at just at 1/2 spacing and touched down just shy of the green dot. First time flying in.

The wife and I are doing a west coast trip this year. So far we’ve been to AMA, Santa Fe, Bryce Canyon, Big Bear Lake, Camarillo and Halter Ranch vineyard. We have another week to go. Love our RV chariot!

Happened this past week, not the weekend, but not worthy of a standalone thread...

With 1059 hours (including 964 in RV's) I passed the Commercial and Multi checkrides July 16 -- nearly 18 years after my PPL. DPE had no problem giving the checkride in my 9A. If you'd told me just a year ago that I would be sitting here holding these temporaries, I would have laughed. Life is quirky. No real certainty what comes next, just logging more hours and keeping an ear to the ground for potential multi time, and eventually any corporate/charter/fractional opportunities.

I found out that friend of mine and a former co-worker had never been flying in a private aircraft, or in anything with fewer than 60 seats. He’s an aviation enthusiast and drone pilot and now an RV-wannabe!

Cousin bought a weight shift trike last year, kept meaning to fly down to take a look at it. Only 93 miles away, practically next door at RV speeds. Finally got around to it.

Spent the afternoon giving rides. Was standard Utah July weather, hot and bumpy. Density altitude ranged from 8000-8400 ft. Too windy for the trike, but not a problem for the RV. Fun day, ended up flying 4.8 hours.

Got home before sunset, which is important for those of us who didn't waste money and weight on lights.
