UL Power

For a lot of reasons (not the least of which is the absurd lead times for new Lycomings), I'm planning to install the UL520iSA (modern design, lighter, fuel injection, electronic ignition, FADEC, inverted oil). I don't see a lot of activity under alternative engines, so I'm wondering if anyone is considering UL Power, to start a running thread?

They make an 8" extension for the engine mount, and a cowl for RV's like the -7 I'm building.

I was wondering the same.. Was thinking to build a Waiex B likely with UL, but when I got in it with my daughter as a stand-in for my wife for sizing purposes (at Oshkosh this year) it was just too tight - my head was up to the canopy and could hardly move the stick (I'm 6'2")... So back to RV land. My head says -14, but my heart wants to do -8. Thinking UL for that, but I wouldn't want a kludged motor mount. Does anybody make a proper mount yet?

Keep in mind--

that the fuel system on a UL Power engine requires return lines to the tanks. So the 'absurd' lead times you stated for the Lycomings can also apply to the Andair FS2020 duplex valve. And to get everything plumbe under the stock covers, if that is what you want, then the valve needs to be configured correctly (IMHO), or you'll be make even more modifications.

No stock plumbing will work with this engine, all custom.

If memory serves, the UL Power rep in Georgia has done installs in a variety of RV's so might be a useful point of contact.

I wouldn't call it a kludge. I've seen it, and it's neat and clean. You might not know it was an extension if you were not looking for it. When I spoke to them at Airventure they did not have plans to make a full mount because the Vans mount integrates the landing gear. I think they want to avoid any of the things that would add more complication for them, and probably less liability.

I looked ahead at what was needed, so I built both my tanks with return hardware. If needed I use them. If not, I keep them capped.

"Custom" is not an issue, really. I plans-built my Sonex. Everything was custom. Nobody makes anything for a Sonex, so you do it all yourself. It's not rocket science, as they say :) I don't think I've seen two RVs that are the same under the hood. And they make the cowl that fits the RVs with their engine.

And the lead times for a Lycoming sure are absurd. Another RV-7 builder friend of mine ordered his a year and a half ago. They promised December 2022. Then May 2023. Now they say January 2024. Given that track record, I don't think he trusts the January date.

I have mounted a UL Power 520T in my RV-8. I made up an engine mount with guidance from the factory (and a bunch of WandB calls). The install is easy, and the return fuel plumbing is no big deal. I am using the Newton SPRL duplex fuel selector.
I have previously posted some pics, but will put some more up shortly when I get a chance to get back into the shed.

Is that valve one of these?
