Titan X-340

Does anyone have any first hand experience replacing a Lycoming O-320-D3G with a Titan X-340?

Fixed pitch carbureted.

Can you simply bolt the accessories ( exhaust, carb, mags, etc ) on and fit the same cowl? Was told that baffling is a little different as the cylinders are tapered.

Just trying to get a feel for a real world replacement.

I replaced an O-320 (no suffix as it was the original from the 1950's) with an x-340 on my old Lancair. There were a few changes that I had to make.

1: the oil sump and accessory cases were different. I ended up using the oil sump and accessory case from 320 on the 340. The oil pickup location on the 340 accessory case didn't match my old sump and the 340 sump didn't match my carb setup.
2: all baffles transferred over without much more than a slight modification at the front if I recall.
3: the prop flange bushings were different; I ended up getting a new custom set from Saber Manufacturing.
4: mags were direct transfer
5: exhaust was direct transfer
6: cowl was the same

Thank you !

Just what I’m looking for.

I was going through old pics looking for something else and found these pics. The dirty accessory case is from my 320. The shiny one is from the 340. Note the location of the oil pickup on the bottom of the accessory cases is different. The 340 has an open hole on the bottom out of sight in the pic. The 320 bottom hole is filled in solid aluminum.

Also, if you're going to remove that accessory case, might as well confirm your oil pump parts aren't subject to an AD while you're in there...

I have an IO340 on my 9A. It did not replace an engine but I can tell you the baffles I have are all the original 320 baffles from Vans. In fact, all the accessories (starter, alternator, mags, electronic ignition, etc.) fit just like a 320.

I replaced my O-320 B2B with an ECI/Titan O-340. I probably have the original prototype (or close to it).

No changes were required for it all to fit.

I later switched to fuel injection, and due to my early "320 cowl", I had to make a new FAB, and Don (AFP) made custom plates/fittings so it would work with that cowl. With the currently shipped cowls, I suspect that there is no issue.

Thank you. It’s looking like it will be minimal effort to replace my current engine.

I did the baffle mod for the tapered fins. It was finicky for me but with more metal working experience I dont think it would be hard. The question is, is the mod needed? I see people posting all the time that they didn't change anything, it seems like a lot of air would leak. I am new to this do just my $.02. I am noob
