So long, 2025. I’m grateful for a lot of things that happened this year (I’m still in business!), and terribly sad about others (the passing of some great friends). Haven’t exactly been a fan of Dec 31 since 1999 - my father passed 25 years ago today. The wing of our family’s -6 was under construction, so he never saw it fly. Mom did, though!
I’m grateful for friends, especially my RV friends. Thank you for being in my life.
I’m grateful for you, and that’s a big part of what keeps my gyros properly tracking. This community is…..well….let’s just say I am so glad it’s in the world, and I thank you again for helping me keep it around. And helping steer it.
The modern internet can be a bit of a handful. VAF is a nice, calm corner over there behind that tree. With a glass of sweet tea and a laughing friend.
I’m grateful.
Happy New Year to all of you!!!!!

Flying Behind the Hartzell 2C1-R419A1X/75CS08-2X Composite for a Bit
Hartzell reached out a few months back and asked if I would like to try their composite prop for a few weeks. Carbon Blended Airfoil / Engineering model designation: 2C1-R419A1X/75CS08-2X. Shortened a few places to '75CS08'. FMI pages 1-18 at...

Help with Centre Section Spacer
So I am sure I am over thinking this step, but when I get to this bit: The F-804A-2 and F-804B-2 Center Section Sub Assemblies must be held in correct alignment while they are being joined and while the fuselage is being assembled. Make two hard wood or particleboard spacers 1 7/16 (1.438)...

Ready for Wings!
The past couple of days were spent on small FWF tasks on our F1 project - riveting baffle seals, securing the main wire bundle behind the engine mount, and cleaning up a secondary GPS antenna mount that lives under the cowling. That was all in preparation for the “big move” - we are creating...

AN470 rivet direction
This is super basic so I may have missed something I should have picked up. I am on page 07-05, step 2, riveting various parts to the R-902 spar. For universal head rivets, if the plans don't specify which sides get the factory/shop heads, are we free to pick the sides that make things easiest...

Flap up limit stop switch
I recently bought one of the Infinity stick grips for my RV-8. It has an ON/OFF/(ON) switch for the flaps. The up position raises the flaps and stays on until you flip it to the center position. I am concerned about accidentally hitting it and running the flap motor in the up direction for an...

Bending 1/4" fuel vent lines
I've spent 3 hours unsuccessfully trying to figure out how to make the fist few bends in the fuselage fuel vent line, when it comes off the bulkhead fitting through the side of the fuselage. The first bend needs to be nearly 90 degrees and needs to happen in less than an inch, to clear the angle...

Fuel Boost Pump Failure Modes and Expected Life
Well...after getting my RPM issue sorted out (see previous threads on low-pitch static stops adjustment), I was heading back to the airport and I turned the boost pump on for landing. During the approach, I caught a whiff of some fumes - 100LL plus cigarette smoke. Took me a minute to realize...

Fiberglass Cloth, What to Buy?
Anyone have recommendations on what weights and weave for cloth? Also the Carbon Fiber for making the windscreen fairing more rigid across the top? The supplier offered a 4" tape. He said I could get carbon fiber in a bi-directional weave, but there's a minimum pre-cut size to buy. Also...

Nose gear leg fairing - broken tap
Here we go. In the attempt of tapping the screw mount for the nose gear steering I accidentally broke off the 8/32 tap. Unfortunately, the tap broke right at the surface, so that I saw no way of removing it. Since the fairing certainly needs a screw on the left and on the right side, I drilled...

Get the cap all the cool kids are wearing! I don’t get a penny. It’s around $15. $5 more if you want your N-number on the back (I put 'STAFF' on the back of mine because it makes me laugh. Put STAFF on yours too if it makes you smile). And down the road $10 to the charity of your choice...
