Stainless Steel Firewall Penetrations

For the RV-8 builders, a new triple penetration matching the 1.5" spacing on the firewall plan...throttle, mixture, prop.

I have some remaining mild steel double and triple penetrations, so it's time to clear 'em out. The double can be used anywhere. The triple matches the RV-10 firewall drawing. They're delivered bead blasted and ready to paint. Note I've been flying mild steel penetrations on my own airplane for 15 years, painted with rattle can Rustoleum, and they still look great. Mild steel and stainless steel fittings perform the same.



Tubular steel penetration fittings are absolutely fireproof and gas-tight.



Installation is dead simple; cut an appropriate opening, deburr, and attach the fitting with some sealant under the flange using any steel pop rivet. The flange may be installed over or under a firewall insulation overlay.

From there, two choices. For control cables and large electrical cables, just pump the annular space full of FireBarrier 2000+ or other silicone base intumescent sealant.



For a bundle of small wires, apply a skim of sealant around the annular space, then use two clamps to fasten a short length of standard firesleeve. This approach allows adding or changing a wire later.

Any thoughts on these vs. the eyeball fittings? These are certainly much less expensive. And I believe the eyeball fittings have an aluminum eyeball so not the best for fire protection. Any other plusses or minus? I'm at this point in my build so it's perfect timing and I'm looking for any educated opinions.

Cable Safe Brand Firewall Cable Pass-through

What kind of firewall pass through are you using for the Van's supplied throttle/mixture/prop cables? I tried the Cable Safe II 3/8", but its too large. The outer diameter of the Van's cables is about .33", just small enough that the 3/8" Cable Safe won't capture it. Wouldn't the 1/4" be to...

The all-steel eyeballs are fine, but they are likely to weigh more than the new SS tubular design, and they are far more fussy to install.

That depends. The steel eyeball fittings should be good. And they allow you to have the control cable exit at an angle. The aluminum eyeball fittings go away pretty fast in a fire.
And the eyeballs are a lot easier to un-do if/when you need to replace a throttle or mixture cable.
