SOLVED: Need help adding B&C starter

My RV-8 (Lycoming IO-360-M1B) has gone through two Sky-Tec 149-12LS starters and now the 3rd is starting to act up. I've heard only good things about B&C, so I purchased one of their starters (BCS206-149-12) only to find there are some fitting problems: First, it runs into the snorkel (Fig. 1), but that can be fixed with a little fiberglass work [tip of the hat to VAF member riseric]. The bigger problem is that the Avstar mixture linkage (Fig. 2) smacks into the back of the B&C starter housing (Fig. 3). As you can see, there is only about a finger's worth of space before you run out of mixture control.

It seems to me someone on this forum ran into the same issue, but I can't seem to find anything via the search box. Could the mixture linkage be rerouted with a different bell crank, etc?

Any tips or tricks would be much appreciated; I land in some pretty remote areas and a reliable starter is paramount.

Get another male heim and a coupler nut. Cut off some of the threads on the heims and make a shorter link. You can then clock the mixture arm more rearward. It is currently clocked too far forward anyway.

After scratching our heads for awhile, my local A&P came up with a solution. As it so happens, AVStar makes a lever that offsets the mixture linkage such that it just clears the B&C starter housing. This, along with a little fiberglass work on the snorkel, seems to have done the trick. Many thanks to all involved in finally getting a reliable starter into this RV-8. Comments appreciated.

That is a great outcome! Thanks for posting the solution. I'm sure you will be happy with the B&C (I have one also, though there is no interference with the carb'd O-320).
