I’m building a 10 with dual fuel tanks. Two tanks in each wing. That means we’ve got an extra 60 gallons of fuel capacity. Now, here’s the thing: the SAFETY NOTICE 00108 says that for every additional gallon of fuel, we need to reduce the Vne by 2.8 knots. So, 60 gallons times 2.8 knots, and that’s a whopping 168 knots!
The Vne of the RV10 is 200 knots, so if we subtract 168 from it, we get 32 knots. According to SAFETY NOTICE 00108, that’s the maximum Vne for the RV10 with dual fuel tanks.
This limitation effectively grounds the aircraft!
I’m not sure how many RV10s were built with dual fuel tanks over the years, but I reckon it’s in the dozens. And here’s the interesting part:
I haven’t heard of a single one of those aircraft disintegrating or experiencing flutter.
On the other hand, haven’t heard any Vne limitations on those 10s
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
