RV12 34-07 Step 4

Well I am trying to tap the "rear" tail portion of my canopy handle and all three of my 8-32 taps will not fit through the #19 hole at the "front" of the handle. My first attempt, the tap just sheared off. Am I doing something wrong or do I need a different tap, something called an extension tap?

Edit: Just received a Bosch Tap and it did work! BDT832
