RTV for cooler Box

I followed the instructions for the use of RTV to make a gasket. It did not adhere well and may end-up redoing it. Two questions.

1. Should I clean the cooler door with anything in particular prior to putting it on?
2. What are your thought's on high temperature tape to form the seal?
