Rebuilding a starter bendix

I have a starter bendix that wouldn’t disengage from the ring gear so out of curiosity on how they work I took it apart. I have all the parts and tried putting it back together at least a half a dozen times but for the life of me I can’t make it work. I know I can order a new one but they are pretty pricey. I was wondering before I do is there anyone out there who knows how to repair or at least show me how they are supposed to go back together. I can’t find anything online on how they work or a IPC with an exploded view. The bendix in question is a EBB-75AIMG_1397.jpegIMG_1398.jpeg

A different part, but I had the starter solenoid go out on my Lycoming starter. I removed the solenoid and took it to an automotive starter and alternator rebuild shop in SoCal, where I got stuck. He walked in the back and came out with a new part. 40 bucks. Worth a try. I'm sure you know, many of these thousand-dollar starters are just overpriced auto parts.
Most good size cities have specialty shops like this.

an actual bendix style usually has long rollers in it. never seen on like that. without having it in my hands, have no idea how to guide you.

As a first step, with that Bendix engaged into the ring gear, check for clearance between the teeth of the two gears. The issue may not be defective parts, but lack of clearance between the teeth on the Bendix and the teeth on the ring gear.

UPDATE: I found a starter/generator shop and spoke to someone about my issue. It turned out that the bendix wasn’t bad. This is a ratcheting type starter drive that is common on old tractors and some cars. What happened is the bendix kicked out and locked in the start position. All I had to do was reset it. There’s a few videos on youtube that showed how to do it. I followed the tutorial and voila, it worked. So I put the starter back together and everything is good to go. This is great information to know because a new certified starter drive is over $500. The experimental version can be found for less than $100, but if it aint broke why waste the money.
