Rear Tiedown

After the hurricane blasted through the north of this area I noticed that the rear Tie-down of my RV6A was bent and that the F-612 bulkhead was torn slightly. Winds were about 40-50 knots in this area. Something I'll have to fix unfortunately. The way the Tie-down was installed by the builder was attaching a bracket with a Tie-down ring welded to it and bolted to the F-612 bulkhead. The way it is now, force is torqued at almost a 45 degree angle angle to the bulkhead, the bottom of the bulkhead tore where the plate attaches.

I've read some post where people mention the RV7 design is better, but I can find any pictures to see what this is. Does anyone else have any other solutions they have used that have worked out well?

That tear in the F-712 bulkhead is concerning. It appears a doubler will be difficult to install properly. The way that tie down mod was installed didn’t help. Note the lack of a bolt on the bottom left. I highly suggest you get Vans tech support involved in this repair. I’m thinking the proper repair will be to drill out the old F-712 and install a new one. My 2 cents…
Thanks, Joe

Suggestion to the OP along with asking Vans for technical advise is to order up a thumb drive for the 7, don't know if available for the 6. Best 10 bucks you can spend. I agree with Caveman as far as the F-712 and F-711 bulkhead.

Addendum: Part# (FD-Plans RV 6/6A) Part# (FD-Plans RV 7/7A) Flashdrive for either is 17.50 (inflation) :)

Good luck with the repair.

I just did the 7A upgrade on my 6A. Great upgrade. Tail tie down is sold now. The old was bent like yours and starting to fail. I didn't have any bulkhead damage. I had an experienced builder help me with the installation. It wasn't very difficult with a couple of tricks on getting it lined up just right. You will need to have someone that has smaller hands. Mine were too big to get into the area. Good thing my help had smaller hands.
