Push to Start or Key

Toggle switches and push to start. The same as my wife's Porterfield, 2 Citabriia's. 2 Decathlons, 2 Christen Eagle's and my RV7 to mention a few.

The installation manual for UL engines state the trigger signal to the starter relay should be rated at 35A
That is a big switch, but experience says that although a 5 amp rated switch may last many years, the relay trigger circuit can experience up to 30 amp surges when activated and eventually fail the switch. For reliability sake they recommend a 35A rated high quality switch. So a 35A rated switch MOM push button is what I'm going with.

No key and no visible push button for me. Not my original idea. I used a wiring method provided by another builder that uses on-on-(on) locking switches. Both switches must be pushed up (mom) at the same time to engage starter. This leaves L mag (impulse) on for starting and turns off R mag (non-impulse) until you release the switches. Once you release the switches then they both go to "run" and R mag comes on line. This way I don't have to worry about loosing keys, simpler wiring without more botton/switch and is kind of a hidden start sequence. I really like it.

I'm pretty sure that the right mag is ungrounded in both the middle on and the (on) positions based on your schematic.

Here's my schematic, stripped of all unnecessary stuff like indicator lights. You can clearly see that this grounds the right mag during starting.
