Project/Airworthiness Question

A questions for the DAR's.

After a project has passed through several hands with all adding to the progress along its life, is it difficult to get an airworthiness when it's complete and ready to fly?
Not asking about the paperwork process, but the willingness of the DAR to sign off that it was built for "education and enjoyment "?

What's the minimum criteria?

Just trying to educate myself.

Depends on the DAR. Some may want to see some sort of builder log evidence of amateur build. Others, well, I hate to disparage. Let's just say the T/C was more thorough. He did want to see proof the engine had been run, fuel flow test was done, AROW documents were in order and controls moved in the correct directions. That's about it. Then a big check. Ouch.

I do recommend Paul's suggestion. Have a pre-AWC party. Stacks of sticky notes and markers. Adult beverages for after. Each person is encouraged to tag items in plain sight with a sticky. You will find really important stuff. This isn't a time for ego. We all make mistakes. It's a time to find mistakes and fix them before she flies.

I like to see the build logs all the way through. Its pretty easy to figure out of it was Amateur-built by looking at the dates on the kit, the logs, the quality of the work, etc. Few folks hire a build shop then quit and sell the kit on the open market (more often, they woudl sell it to the build center).
