Problems putting on new wheel pants

I am putting Sky Designs Aero pants on a flying 10. Inner bracket is on. There is a required spacing for the outer bracket. It seems that the axle nut that is on the plane already will either be way too short or too long. I have new Grove axle nuts that seem to offer the right length BUT where the cotter pin holes are cut things are wrong. If I put the axle nut close to on all the way I can't put the cotter pin through, if I leave the axle nut loose enough to put a cotter pin there is what I judge to be an unacceptable amount of play.

I can think of two solutions by myself
-drill more cotter pin holes in the nut at the right depth
-put some kind of spacer/washer between the axle and axle nut

I do not know if these are adequate or if there is a better way.

Thank you.

I fear if I elongate enough the cotter pin will fit right in there...

I got an email back from Sky Deigns, will just cut my original standoff to length and make sure it is threaded.

Do not drill new holes in the Grove axle nut. Drill new holes in the axle for the Grove axle nut. Use washers on the axle to get the exact pant bracket to bracket that you want. Put the Grove axle nut on and tighten the nut for proper wheel bearing load. Drill a #30 hole using the Grove axle nut as a guide. You may want to drill on a different flat as the existing axle nut holes.

Side note - many end up with more than one hole in the axle as the right axle nut tightness ALWAYS end up between the existing holes in the axle nut
