Oil filters 12iS

Just now at the first oil filter change on my new 12iS, and notice the 10x price range for what look like similar oil filters from various sources.
Two questions: Is there evidence to confirm that filters that cost 10X as much are better in ways that matter?
Second, how do you open the can to look for metal without making/scattering metal bits from the can onto the filter inside?

You don’t need to cut open the oil filter. Instead, simply take out the magnetic plug located directly above it. Additionally, it’s advisable to send an oil sample to a laboratory after every oil change. This will provide you with a trend data base for future reference. You’ll be able to identify any potential issues promptly.

The magnetic plug only picks up ferrous material.
