I'm New Here
Greetings Everyone,

New member here! I just put down a deposit on a tail and wing kit for the RV-10 this morning, and I’m excited to begin my first build. I feel like a 10-year-old kid before Christmas! I’ll definitely be using this forum for all the help I can get, and I really appreciate all the great information I’ve found on this board over the past several months.

I also placed an order for the RV-10 tool kit from Planetools.com last night. Please feel free to share any advice on things I might need before the first crate arrives.

Welcome Keith. There is a ton of good information here. Just remember that there is also a fair amount of bad information here. It will take a little patience to learn who to listen to and who not to.

Congrats on pulling the trigger. I also started with the Planetools set and it's enough to get you started. Recommend Cleaveland, Aircraft Tools Supply, and Yardstore for additional tools and consumables. One piece of advise I wish someone had given me is don't hesitate to buy the right tools. You'll end up struggling through half your build and then finally give in and buy something you should have had from the get go - you don't save any money, you only reduce the amount that you get to use it. Most recent thing I bought is a nut plate jig. Never thought I really needed it, but also always struggled with nut plates. Now I'm almost done and finally bought one - jeez it makes life easier. Get a #8 for sure, and a #10 if you want. Probably don't need the #6 - there are very few.

Try other flush rivet sets too. I personally like the "boeing" set with the polyurethane ring. Tried the swivel set, but didn't like it as much - you'll find your favorite. And keep the pressure low. The 3x gun that comes with the planetools is a lot of gun for -3's. I turn down to 30-35 psi on the regulator. Practice, practice, practice.

Get a rivet fan. The -10 doesn't have that many holes that need to be laid out, but there are enough that a fan is very useful for little fabrications that you'll have.

I did use the planetools tungsten bar for 95% of my rivets.

Look me up if you're ever up around Dallas and I'd be happy to show you the build. I'm on the doors - yuck!

Keith, welcome.

I go down to KCRP every now and then on job2. I'll look you up and we'll do lunch.
