New FAA policy on release of registration information

I’m too happy to see this.

While it won’t erase other websites data, the information won’t be able to be verified by going to the gov site………so it may not be valid (meaning that if someone looks up info on WWW, they won't know if it's current).
Going forward, new purchases/transfers won’t get distributed around the globe.

I made a “Memorandum for record” and stated that I didn’t want my data public using the verbatim words they use in the press release “request to remove PII from aircraft record searches” dated it and signed it.
I also added a request to remove my PII from the last ten years of archived registration data available for download on the FAA website. I can't find those archives any more so maybe the FAA removed them. :)

I referenced my n-number on my document and requested that the registration be withheld from public view. Then I took a screenshot of the FAA registration info, pasted that onto the document, saved it as a pdf, uploaded the document and submitted the document. My submission was accepted and stated it would be reviewed by 5/21/25. Hopefully, that meets their requirements.
Just checked the FAA website and my registration information was removed several days sooner than promised.

I just went to CARES to submit my request and discovered this:

"The CARES records search feature will be temporarily unavailable from April 24 to May 23. The Civil Aviation Registry public website continues to be available as the official source of aircraft record inquiries and requests. CARES is continuing to improve its services until it becomes the official system of record for aircraft registration."

While the banner specifically states that the website continues to be available for requests I could not login. Just a week away assuming the FAA tech team is on time.

My registration details are now private thank you! Only took 10d or so. My name is still shown as the manufacturer.

Just curious, when did you make the request? Mine was on May 3 & they’re still displaying my data. My review date was 5/21
You still have a few days before review. How did you submit request? The website says it is temporarily unavailable. It also says requests can still be submitted but It does not allow me to sign in to do so.

It must have just refreshed as I just checked & my personal info has been removed.
Although, My name does show up as the "Manufacturer Name". If you take that info & do a lookup in the airman registry, you can get my info, though it doesn't mean I still own the aircraft. It does make it more difficult for anyone getting personal info.

Edit: I entered my request through Cares on May 3rd.

You can request to have your PII for your airman certification withheld, as well. The name and certificate type are still public info, but your address or other PII can be withheld.

Information finally made private about 2 weeks after the FAA planned review date. Different story for my reserved N number though. Requested that information be made private at the same time but that has not happened and not sure if it will.

My review date was more than a month ago, but no apparent action so far. ☹️

Below is what I submitted. I received no feedback, but the information was removed from the N-number registry by the first time I checked, about two weeks after submitting.

""

This is communication that I am voluntarily requesting the removal of my name and address from public dissemination. I would like to keep my registered owner information private under 49 U.S.C. § 44114(b).

Name:

Present Address:

My name may be associated with the following aircraft N-Number

Just as a point of reference, I submitted my request 3/29, it initially showed Pending with a review date about 2 weeks later, then that slipped day for day until it hit 4/14. I emailed to ask about it, and got 1) a response that had nothing to do with my request, then after clarifying, 2) a response that basically said "we're working on it". At some point after that, my PII was removed from public display in the FAA database, but even today, CARES still shows a review date of 4/14 and Pending. Seems their process is not yet refined. I'll just let it sit until it sorts itself out or a few years passes and I ask them to fix it. :)

Also an interesting side note...the aircraft info displayed for mine does *not* include the red wording about "information removed at the request of the owner" or whatever it says. So that seems to be a manual thing, too.

That’s odd as mine displays the red banner after 2 weeks.

Update: My Cares account still states "Pending", but my review date was changed to the date I submitted, May 3. Anyway, it's completed.

Just checked flightaware after confirming owner information for my N-number is private on the FAA website. Searching my n-number now shows “unknown owner” where it had shown my name in the past.

They did it by getting your aircraft documentation in CARES. It's in
Aircraft Services > Request Aircraft Records

From there, you can download any documents associated with the aircraft, as PDF files.

I would think that would fit squarely within the new law and its definition of PIJ
Just checked and, lo and behold, all of my PII *and* the documents (BOS, application for reg, etc.) for the aircraft are no longer publicly available by using this part of the tool! Progress!

My Pll info is now restricted.

On another note, I asked ChatGPT who was the owner of N20DL.
It did have me as the manufacturer, but also stated,
"The registration is held by an individual who has opted to keep their personal information private under Title 49 of the United States Code Section 44114."
Very up to date, I might say.

I also asked for my pilot info on my FirstName, Middle Name, LastName.
Apparently, I have been convicted of First degree murder in 2001 & on death row. Yikes!!!

To resurrect this thread: I'm finally getting around to requesting removal. Where on the CARES website are you all submitting your requests?

I used Aircraft Services -> Submit Other Aircraft Documents...

Request Type - Other Supporting Documents
Document Type - Other

...and I uploaded a PDF letter requesting removal. Is this what worked for you?

EDIT: And does anyone have anecdotal experience avoiding bullshit Vector landing fees by making your registration anonymous? I've discovered that a dozen local airports have added or are considering adding these fees and I'm convinced it will be every single airport within a couple of years. We're past the point where you can convince any municipalities not to add fees - the public hates GA and the cities love new revenue streams.

i I have not run into vector yet. the FAA did a good job cleaning up registration info and it’s not so easy to link my name to the tail anymore. both flightaware and flightradar hid the info as well. i suspect vector still has the old records though and will try to use them

Do you think flightradar (or for that matter vector) scraped the registration info from the FAA prior to the removal? Or did you get dinged already and they will have your info on file?

i have never been dinged by vector, but now im curious how they are going to deal with the masked registrations. if they downloaded the entire registration database in the past it would have the info. Or if the FAA gives them backdoor access..

This is the most likely case, and the FAA will assert that they are giving them the data because they "have a lawful need for it" or some other quasi-legal rationale.

Also, as a standard procedure Vector is installing high-resolution runway cameras to get visual confirmation of registration numbers as a primary source and will use ADS-B data as a secondary source.

Just as I suspected, this was never going to be limited to just ADS-B, and passing laws limiting the use of ADS-B to prevent revenue collection wasn't going to fix it. GA in the US will become like GA in Europe overnight.

Well, thats discouraging. I know with the red light camera companies, they force the municipality to share in the setup cost. Therefore, if the pilots push back, even if the airport wanted to get out of the deal, they are committed untill they recoup that investment. I had foolishly hoped there would be some way to prevent this thing from steam rolling across the country.:(

OLur village installed a red light camera and the population revolted. Village agreed to take it down, but was years before they broke even.

It's been several months since I did mine, but that looks right.
