Hey RV builder community
Since I no longer have the level of association with Van's Aircraft that I formally had, I decided to post up a builder tips video on my own.

It is not up to the same quality that Greg previously produced, but if it is positively received I may do more in the future when able.

The subject is evaluating dimple countersunk finish quality on external sheet metal skins. Youtube link is below

Scott, I have not yet watched this but will.

Thank you for doing this, I hope you continue with more of the same. I will subscribe and would support in some fashion if you continue to add value.

The idea is excellent, and thanks so much for your time sharing your experience.

I watched this first video, and in my humble opinion found it long winded. Might be that, as a seasoned builder who's been around for a while, all these details aren't really new to me, but the same video will certainly provide a wealth of informations to a new builder.
As an idea, filming of the actual process of making different dimples, using the different tools, with different force applied, could also help in demonstrating the ok vs better way to perform those.

Again, thanks for the initiative Scott (y)

Noted

It wasn’t intended for experienced builders because once they have riveted on a bunch of skins there is nothing they can do to change them🙄

And for good reason, it wasn’t titled how to dimple. Perhaps a techniques video could be one for the future.

Thanks for the feedback.

I just subscribed, keep em coming!

Good video Scott. I was a little disappointed that you did not include pop-rivet dimpling for tight places. I know a lot of people don't like the procedure but I have built 9 airplanes using ONLY vice grip and pop-rivet dimplers and every one that has been submitted has been award winners.

Scott-

I have great respect for your expertise in all things RV related. Thank you for making the effort to share your experience with the RV community with this video and your interaction here on VAF.

Subscribed, will watch it when I get home.
Thanks, as a first time builder any information like this is Gold.

I don't know if that's determination or you just didn't want to go in and watch "The Golden Girls" with the XYL....😬

Have you thought about doing a video about this specific technique?
From a selfish perspective, I’m just about to dimple my top skin and I think I’m going to be using the pop rivet simpler a lot. So any advice would be gratefully received!

Not good at doing videos, but the secrete is getting the set-up right. Using a pneumatic puller, set the air pressure just high enough to pull a good solid dimple. Just before you pull the trigger, wriggle the puller in a circular motion to make sure the male die is centered in the hole.

By doing this I can usually do an entire wing skin with one mandrel. You will have to "clean up" the mandrel a few times where the puller boogers it up.
Just a quick spin on the belt sander.

It's not that difficult. Of course you must have good dimple dies. Mine were made by Bob Avery (Best aviation tool maker around).

Cheers Mel! Will be trying to put that into practice.

Vice grips sounds like a great idea for extra tight spaces. I have 2 I have to do that may end up being the technique I use!
