Nav Antenna Conduit Installation

I'm New Here
Hello!

We are on page 42PiS-05 getting ready to run the conduit for the Nav antenna. We were trying to figure out how to get to the bottom of the VS with it already installed on the tail cone? Did any of you crawl inside the tail cone to get to the bottom of the VS to drill that #19 hole? Luckily, the tail cone is not attached to the fuselage yet but any advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

We were afraid of that. Wonder why they had us attach it back in section 11 if we'd have to undo all bolts we put in place.

Its an option that few builders install. I ordered the parts after reading sec 42is before building VS. About $60.

We'll be going back to section 11 tomorrow to see how we disassemble the whole thing. The same thing happened to us with the tunnel cover assembly. We installed the one that Vans sent us in the finishing kit only to find out it has to be removed, rivets and all, after another came in the avionics kit. We're getting a lot of re-assembly/disassembly practice ;)

There's a LOT of that re-sequencing in the -12 build! It will really help to read - study - all of the plans through before building. Won't eliminate all, but will make a big difference to mark up the plans for sequencing.

This is where some advice was given to me many many years ago applies. Before you start your build read the manual and then read it again paying more attention to it then during the build keep reading it as you move forward, so as not to paint yourself into a corner only this means don't rivet or bolt yourself into an awkward position.

This is why we've continuously told ourselves, "The second plane is going to come out so much better."

Years ago, Joe Gores wrote several pages of builder notes about building his RV-12 and what he would do different on the next one. I used those notes along with the KAI to build my RV-12 and found them very useful. Not sure if Van's ever picked up on any of them in subsequent RV-12 KAI Revs, but they were a good community resource. Would be a good starting point for a current RV-12iS builder to update and share.
