N Number Registration on Project Purchase

I purchased a build project. Seller has a n number on reserve. Whats best way to transfer his reserved n number to me? I assume that this is a more speedy process than starting from scratch and generating a new n number on my own? The kit itself was not yet registered by previous owner with the FAA.

Thanks!

Send a letter to Aircraft Registration Branch in Oklahoma City requesting to reserve the number. Include a check for $10. Also include a letter from the current holder of the number stating that the number is to be transferred to you.

It's really not any more speedy - as a matter of fact, it may be more cumbersome. I just reserved an N number last week - I searched the available numbers and spent a couple of days deciding which one I wanted and after that point it took all of about 3 minutes to put the reservation request in. It's a simple online form and credit/debit card payment on the FAA website. Super simple and quick.

A reserved N number that hasn't been registered to a plane is just that, a reservation that belongs to whomever reserved it. If you don't care about that specific N number, then reserve your own or just take whatever the FAA Gives you when its time.

Trying to use their N Number is just a waste of time unless you want it.
Reservations aren't tied to an airframe until you actually register it.

Just a datapoint….we have been trying to do the same thing - transfer a received N-Number form the previous owner of a kit that we took over to our name - since last October. The current owner of the N-Number reservation wrote a letter askign to have it transfered, and nothing happened. He hired a Title company in OKC to take carer of it a couple of months ago - still no final word that it has transfered. It shouldn’t be this hard, and never has been before - but the Registry seems to be in significant distress these days.
