My RV-12iS Paint Job

Showing off my RV-12iS paint job that John Stahr and I did in my hangar a couple of weeks ago.

I built a 12' x 24' booth and we painted her in 7 days! Definitely worth all the work! Get in Touch with John Stahr if you want a beautiful, unique airplane! See the cover of this month's Sport Aviation for another example of John's work.

I have an open slot for Builder Assist services if you want me to help you build your RV. This is the forth RV that I've built.

Tony (or any VAF member) ... how many gallons would you estimate it would take to paint an RV12?
Or even better - what's the surface area of a 12?
"Friends" (with painted planes) that I meet up with at fly-ins are embarrassed to park near me.
So I'm slowly coming around to thinking about finally getting my naked 12 painted.

Less than two gallons of base color (before adding reducer) should do it. We also used a about 1.5 gallons of clear.

I took all my left over paint back to my supplier to be repackaged into smaller cans for long-term storage. I'll have a better idea after I get those cans back and receive the final invoice for how much paint he gave me when we started.

The before vs after W&B showed that the paint job added 11 Lbs. to the empty weight. YMMV.

Great looking plane! Did you do anything with the cheese grater wing tips?

We needed about 10 rattle cans of SEM Pre-etch primer and 2-3 gallons total of base colors plus hardener for an RV12iS. I did the prep (not hard for new surfaces….I scuffed new materials with red scuff pads, tape, mask adjacent color areas) a friend who does cars for a living, did the rest. He has the aviation bug, so might travel to you from Pacific NW.IMG_6209.jpeg
