LOP dilemma

To be fair you can modify the EMAG advance electronically. The ability is not locked out, it is just complicated to implement and you need to know what you are doing. EICAD with a laptop, EI Commander if you can find one/have one, Engine Bridge, or you can make your own microcontroller interface to make it do what you want which is what I did.

Just so I’m smarter on the subject, when you say “…modify the EMAG advance…”, do you mean shift the whole curve, or modify the slope of the curve (modify individual points on the MAP and/or RPM map)?

Need the clarity because many people think that they can modify timing and in the past that’s been nothing more than a crude shift in the whole curve. The as delivered timing curve on the PMAG is a mess, and if that can now be fixed that is one less thing against the PMAG product.

This belongs in a different thread as it is specific to the EMAG.

Two different modes. With the Jumper IN you can’t change the “curve” and are stuck with its range and how it is applied. Only way to make an adjustment with the jumper IN is to clock the timing of the EMAG some degree ATDC. I believe this method accommodates the majority of users. Many posts on this going back years.

With the Jumper OUT it uses programmed setpoints for the Advance Shift (go negative for lower base advance) and Maximum Advance (the maximum it will advance to). Personally, I would never use the pre-programmed Jumper Out curve as it is even more aggressive. But with the Jumper OUT, you can change those parameters. You can even remove any advancing from base. Example set Advance Shift to 0 and Max Advance to 25 – result stays at 25 (in reality I think it goes to 26.4 fixed).

You can use the EI Commander or Engine Bridge to set a couple different options and switch between. I did this myself with my own controller and a switch. Like I mentioned before doing your own solution is not trivial but it is doable. I don’t think you can change how the curve is applied – meaning modify MP and RPM settings on the curve. I’m happy with a fixed timing for my Mode #1 and Mode #2 is a pushed out advance letting the EMAG apply the curve its way. Again, I’m pretty sure the this can be done with EI Commander or Engine Bridge, I just decided to build my own solution. I don’t know if the other EI solutions allow a 3rd party control or display or if they would even need one.

The goal of my first response is that this is possible with the EMAG and I believe always has been - nothing new. Hartzell could provide a panel mounted control/display but that will be up to them. I think it would smart for them to do it as I’d like the EMAG to stay a viable solution.
