From observing the construction manual of the RV 15 on various postings I wonder if the idea of step by step method was brought into Vans by the younger engineers who had previously built Lego models.

As an aside Lego is the biggest tyre manufacturer in the world.

You may be right. The Lego they played with was probably the current pre packaged, instructions included, projects. Not the ice-cream bucket of pieces that we made whatever we wanted with.
 
For Christmas, Louise gave me a 2500+ piece LEGO SPace Shuttle to build. The manual is 3/4” thick, and is nothing but pictures - remarkably detailed and awesomely correct pictures! My first time building one of these, and as Louise has been building the -15 wing, I constantly refer to it being very much like the LEGO process…..
 
I built the Lego shuttle a year or so ago, it is a very cool kit. This year I got the Shuttle / 747 carrier set and have been chipping away at it.

I also built Legos as a kid back in the 70's and 80's ... not an engineer, but it isn't just the young engineers that grew up with Legos...

I highly recommend adding the Atlas rocket and the lunar lander to the collection. Those are also fun to do.

We have the Concorde going on the kitchen table now.
 
Atlas is definitely on the list! I have the lunar lander and the Concorde still in boxes ... too many projects, not enough time!

The Saturn V rocket is also awesome.

Saturn V is actually what I meant. That's on my office counter...still working on my favorite way to display it.

Don't forget the lighting kits!
 
Funny how much overlap there is between homebuilders and LEGO enthusiasts. We have the Titanic on our fireplace mantle and I treated myself to Starry Night for my birthday last year.
 
That airplane kit is better than my 2012 RV-3B project. For one thing, it came with jigs.

But for the RV-3B, I actually did use Lego for something: I wanted a certain "feel" for the canopy latch, and since I had a collection of Lego Technic parts handy, I used those to develop a working concept. Once that was complete and functioning the way I wanted, I made a full-sized version from wood. Yes, a traditional mock-up. After a few iterations of that I made the one on the airplane now, and it works as I'd hoped.

Alas, Erector Set kits were the thing in my era. My favorite shopping areas were called alleys where Erector Sets were often found sticking out of the bins.

Erector/steel tech sets, Capsela, and Construx for me, in addition to Lego of course. I built a version of the plane from Firefox with the aforementioned bucket of parts.

I looked at some of the nicer Lego sets, and couldn't believe how much prices have changed. Like how filling your tires with air used to be free, then it cost a quarter, now it'll run you 3 dollars! As my friend says...that's just the price of inflation!
